SimpliSafe is a DIY home security monitoring service that offers various home security packages. Customers can customize their security packages or can choose from a package already created. The company has low monthly monitoring fees and doesn’t require a contract, but they charge high upfront fees. People can monitor their automations and security system straight from SimpliSafe’s app.

The Good

  • Low Monthly Monitoring Cost
  • No Long-Term Contracts
  • DIY Installation

Low Monthly Monitoring Cost

SimpliSafe has two, 24/7 monitoring plans. “The Standard” is a home security service that is $15/month. It uses a cellular connection through Verizon and T-Mobile. “The Interactive” is a professional monitoring plan is $25/month. This includes smart home integrations and alerts via mobile app, as well us unlimited camera recording. These monthly fees are lower than other home security systems.

No Long-Term Contracts

SimpliSafe does not require its customers to sign a long-term contract. Instead, their contracts are month-to-month. The company is able to do this because customers buy the home security systems up front, which means the up-front fees will be high. The equipment you purchase has a 3-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee.

DIY Installation

DIY installation can be a pro or a con depending on the individual. SimpliSafe is good for those interested in buying their own home security equipment and setting up the sensors and keypad however they want. Those who want the help of a technician can pay $79 for professional installation.

The Bad

  • Negative SimpliSafe Reviews
  • High Upfront Fees
  • Simplisafe and Hackers

Negative Review Summary

In 2019 so far, Best Home Security Company reviewers have given SimpliSafe an average rating of 3.5/10. The biggest complaints of SimpliSafe are:

  • Sensors. Many customers report having to replace faulty sensors – not connecting to the overall home security system properly, or not sticking to the walls/doors. Specific reviews mention the carbon monoxide sensor.
  • Cheap Equipment. In addition to issues with the sensors, many report that they have experienced issues and glitches with the entire system.
  • False Alarms. Because of the sensor and equipment issues, customers are also reporting false alarms with the SimpliSafe system
  • Customer Service. Reviewers mention that customer service is difficult to work with. Some customer reps have not been helpful in dealing with system issues customers have.

SimpliSafe review from Jaime, left on 4/16/19

I purchased SimpliSafe when my fiancé was being deployed overseas. Upon installation, we didn’t activate the service until he left. Once activated, each time I could call the company, no one would answer. Since then, I have had multiple glitches with the system, the most recent scaring me more than ever. I was home and accidentally tripped the home alarm. I wasn’t able to answer their phone call because I was in the shower, so I couldn’t turn the alarm off either. 4 minutes later, it shut itself off. The company never called me back to see if I was okay.

High Upfront Fees

SimpliSafe customers have to pay for their equipment upfront, which means they will pay a minimum of $229 upfront for SimpliSafe’s most basic system, and over $775 for the most comprehensive system, a doorbell camera, and indoor cameras. This can be expensive for homeowners who don’t have the funds to make a large payment upfront before receiving their home security equipment.

Simplisafe and Hackers

In years past, SimpliSafe has had issues with their hardware getting hacked as reported by Forbes back in February 2016.

The Bottom Line

SimpliSafe is appealing to those in search of home security because of the low monthly monitoring fees. People are also drawn to SimpliSafe because of the DIY installation – they can install it on their own time wherever they want. However, customer service may not be able to help if you run into issues. Many negative reviews about SimpliSafe’s equipment (motion sensor) lead us to believe the low monitoring costs are not worth it. Additionally, customers will pay a lot up-front to buy sensors and other equipment that get a lot of negative reviews. If you do purchase SimpliSafe, the good news is that there are no contracts and the company offers a 60-day money-back guarantee.

We recommend comparing SimpliSafe to the top-rated home security companies with professional monitoring and minimal upfront fees.

Packages and Equipment

Most packages include no contracts, 24/7 professional monitoring, and no phone line is needed. All offered packages come with a. base station, keypad, and sensors.

  • The Foundation: $229.00

This is the smallest equipment package SimpliSafe offers – made for small homes and apartments. It includes a main door sensor, motion sensor, base station, and keypad. As with all plans, buyers can add on SimpliSafe products: a video doorbell (with two-way audio and motion alert) for $169, and SimpliSafe camera for $99. The camera offers motion alerts and you can stream live feed from your app.

  • The Essentials: $259.95

The next package from SimpliSafe is “The Essentials”. Instead of one sensor, this package includes three door sensors. It comes with the base station and keypad.

  • The Hearth: $374.91

Additional equipment includes a key fob, a smoke detector, and a 105dB siren. Only one motion sensor is included.

  • The Knox: $449.87

This kit is ideal for larger homes, as it includes twice as many sensors as the previous packages: six entry sensors and 2 motion sensors.

  • The Haven: $489.86

While this package only includes four entry sensors, it also has a water sensor and a freeze sensor, which will alert you if the temperature in your home drops below 41 degrees. All of these home automation features can be monitored from the company’s app.

  • The Fortress: $509.86

This security system is unique in its offering of two keypads – one for upstairs and for downstairs. This home security set also includes the key fob, panic button, siren, two motion sensors, and six entry sensors.

On 7/31/2018 I upgraded an existing system we had from SimpliSafe, from a solicitation to upgrade for a reduced price by returning our old system. We purchased a camera as part of the package but could not get it to work.

The cameras did not work and we switched out at least 5 of them. Two worked for about a week and then went off line and could not be reconnected. I have spent at least at least 648 minutes (which is 10.8 HOURS) over a minimum of 28 phone calls to rectify the situation. It took an act of congress to receive $59.40 refund for the non-functioning camera. I finally became so frustrated I cancelled both our personal and business accounts. We asked for a refund on the system, Simplisafe refused stating the order was over 60 days. This was over sixty days because we kept trying to get the camera to work and Simplisafe continued to insist we replace the camera. I spent hours trying to get this to work from August through the end of November and then waited months to receive the refund after many LONG phone calls being told it was being refunded and then excuse after excuse of why it had not been refunded. I would have given up trying to get the $59.40 back but it is the principal. How many people have the stolen money from? People who just give up because you really have little reasonable options. I want to return the system and receive a full refund.

I’ve had numerous false alarms over the last year. Police have responded to these false alarms. The first visit to my home cost $100, the second visit cost $200. I had to cancel the monthly monitoring service to prevent additional false alarm visits from the police. In addition to me having to pay escalating false alarm fees, the Police have more important things to do than visit my home to investigate false alarms.

Simplisafe has been a major disappointment.

I have had Simplisafe as my alarm system for over a year. Customer service has been incredibly helpful. I have called only 2 or 3 times. I had problems with the motion sensors. My cats kept setting them off. I was able to return without any cost one of the motion sensors since I had just purchased it. A simple system to protect my home. I simply love it.

We have been using the simplisafe home alarm system for 3 years now and love it! It is very easy to install and use. You can add more devices to accommodate your needs for home or business and choose the monthly plan that fits your needs. The low monthly cost is a bargain when compared to other systems fees. With a battery backup you are still protected during power outages. The customer service reps are very knowledgeable and friendly. Chemar helped me reset my unit and clear the no link to dispatch center message. Some of the reviews are bad but you can’t please everyone no matter how much you try. As with any product you have there will be great reviews and bad ones. We recommend SS to friends and family or anyone that inquires about our system.

Bought two new phones, neither compatible with the simplisafe app. No ay of telling before hand, they do not have a list of devices that work and have a third party publishing the app. It has become useless to me, I’m ripping out the entire system.

It does not keep working for more than a week before it has failures and when you call they sometime hang up on you and when you get some one to trouble shoot system, they run you around to all the sensors and I have been having to change out a bunch at a time. Today I spent a good amount of time this morning hauling a ladder around and taking down to malfunction smoke detectors and two entry sensors and moving the base station. Now I have to wait around a week for the new ones to arrive and install them. The system is not reliable and I do not recommend them as a alternative to a full service alarm company. You will be working on the system more than it works and will not be happy. Last week I left for about five hours and when I got home it said I had entry sensors alarm. No doors had been opened, and nobody was here but the sensors would not work, but were ok when we left. This is the quality of the sensors that they are selling you, and you are doing all the work.

While the product is easy to install and the support is pretty good, I am EXTREMELY unhappy about the billing. Let me explain. For some reason I was getting billed twice. I called customer service to get this corrected and each time they promised to investigate to fix the problem and it could never be resolved. I tried on 4 separate occasions and to do this day still not resolved. Today I finally cancelled my account out of total frustration. The agent didn’t even seem to care about keeping me as a customer and just went ahead to cancel my account, with the standard, Is there anything else I can help you with? Very disappointed.

I ordered this and it arrived promptly Activated it and within I week I got a notice that my base station wasn’t connecting to their monitoring center. I called tech support and they started troubleshooting. The first question I asked was did you send me a Verizon unit?

The support person flat out told me all their units were Verizon. After an hour of being on the phone and not being able to connect, he finally came back on the phone and said they had actually shipped a T Mobile unit. There is NO T Mobiile service in my area.

So rather than shipping a replacement, they send me a Verizon card to install in my exiting unit. I’m handy, so installing it was no big deal, but for someone with no experience or the proper tools this could be an issue.

I also have never received a manual. It was shipped without one and although they said they would ship one, they never did.

Also, they screwed up my secondary contact. If the alarm goes off, they were supposed to contact the secondary before dispatching police Rather, they called me, I didn’t answer, so they dispatched the police.

Just poor service and a lot of disorganization. Alarm woks ok though.

Don’t waste your time like I did… For the first two months (when I thought the system was working), I didn’t have any trouble. Suddenly, the indoor camera began dinging my phone every time someone walked by even though the system was not armed. After calling Troubleshooting, it turns out the SIM card isn’t working and the system was never active in the two months that I had it. Why didn’t they let me know when I did the setup? Hm. So, they send me a free SIM card and give me two months free- okay, fine. So, today I activate the alarm for the first time when I take the dog for a walk. 30 minutes later, I get a call from the police… the alarm has been activated. Nobody from SimpliSafe called me! I get back and the police are there and it seems the garage door was ajar. Why didn’t the base unit tell me that when I activated? Why didn’t the sirens go off? I do not trust this system, and the only reason it gets a 1 is because they are letting me return it.

Don’t fall for the marketing hype…the quality of the system and the service are TERRIBLE even at their discounted price. The hardware fails almost immediately. I purchased more than a dozen sensors, the first failures occurred in in 2 weeks, Now, six months later almost all of them have failed (the door sensors are the only things that haven’t failed). At first they kept sending me replacements, but after a few months the warranty ran out and now I have a $700 investment in a pile of junk! Worst purchase ever!

I was a ADT customer since 2013 to 2017. Their service was fine but was increasing in cost, I was paying $41.57 a month for two door sensors, one motion sensor and one smoke detector. When I received a notice from AAA regarding SimpliSafe, I started my research. The reviews, options and cost were outstanding. So, I placed my order.

The day all my equipment arrived I dismantled the ADT System. When I removed the telephone line attached to the ADT Box it disabled all my telephones in the house. This is very dangerous for the home owner! I went to the telephone interface and observed how they bypassed all my telephone lines and routed through their alarm. My concern is if an intruder cut the wires to the ADT Box the home owner could not call 9-1-1 as the telephone lines would be disabled. As a retired Sheriff this is concerning and very dangerous.

Installing the SimpliSafe Home Alarm System was very easy. The system they sent me uses Verizon Cell Service (no cost to me) so no telephone lines tampered with! They sent me a Base Station, wireless key pad, 2 keychain remotes, motion sensor, 3 door sensors, smoke detector and an outside alarm. My cost after $100.00 off by mentioning AAA was $274.91.

With the SimpliSafe system I can do much more than the ADT Alarm System. With the SimpliSafe IPhone App I can turn the system on or off anywhere I have cellular coverage. SimpliSafe will send me a text message (if requested) when my alarm is set, shutoff or triggered. I now have the option of knowing when a door is opened at my house with a chime sounding. A big bonus is placing water sensors under sinks, toilets and the water heater – this notifies me if there is a water leak. I was able to name the locations of all sensors and accomplish several tasks via the SimpliSafe website. Extremely pleased with SimpliSafe.

I cancelled my service with ADT, not an easy task!! I owned all the equipment! It took seven days of telephone calls and getting different answers from different agents. I believe it is now cancelled – of course ADT has a 30 day notice of cancellation, so out a few more dollars.
I now purchased the upgraded SimpliSafe system – this system uses wifi and cellular.

Was a new customer with two modules that did not worked and was getting ready to leave town, Called the customer service four days and each time on hold for 60 minutes and more. Could not get anyone to answer the phone. Day five, 90 minutes on hold to get help. Clueless agents, had me on hold to check with someone else to get answers and somehow call was disconnected after 30 min. I was really sure hat they could call me back, but did not. Returned the system. Checked the web and noticed that others complained about service. This is not I want from a security company. DO NOT GET IT

Extremely easy to install. All extra sensors added easily. Did the interior and exterior of the house with sensors and 2 cameras in under 2 hours. Activating the monitoring was easy as well. Only drawback was it didn’t extend to an exterior room we added on to the house. We did an entry siren there since it could not reach the monitored system. Still – it was easy, inexpensive, and is working great.

I want to pay my bill by changing settings with auto pay and absolutely cannot find anywhere on website to manage my account. I tried calling three different numbers twice and was on hold 20 minutes. We got a text saying to pay my bill, I called number and was on hold. I have wasted so much of my time, I want to change services now. Problem is I paid $700 for equipment. In less than a year, I have to replace carbon monoxide sensors because they don’t work according to my panel…

I purchased an alarm system to protect my home and family ! SimpliSafe products have to many technical issues! The base station stops working, due to whatever reason the tech person decides to give you! A bucket of B.S. . For days your home and family are left UNPROTECTED! Until they mail you another faulty product! After spending almost $800 on their dime store equipment you are ledt baffled and with NO choice but to find a new alarm system one that actually PROTECTS because it works! Oh did I mention they try to credit you for your monthly service ? What’s the point of a credit when the service doesn’t work!
