Founded in 1874, ADT is one of the oldest home security companies in the world. While it didn’t get into security systems until later, it has a long track record as a security company. With that much experience, ADT-Monitored Security is bound to know what it’s talking about with securing your home, right? While the company one of the largest in the home security space in the nation, many consumers lately have been leaving ADT reviews and have expressed concerns over the equipment, the customer service, and other services offered by the alarm company. Hopefully, our quick Good & Bad breakdown will help give you an idea of what to expect with ADT Security Systems.

The Good

ADT offers three base home security system packages; Traditional, Control, and Video. Each system is professionally installed by an ADT security pro.

For those shopping for home security systems, you can get started with ADT-Monitored Security for just $28.99 per month for its Traditional package. These fees are is slightly lower than the majority of security companies out there. This service comes with limited features but each security system comes with 24/7 ADT monitoring service for fire, carbon monoxide, flood, and burglary and a 6-month money-back guarantee. If during this time, you are at all dissatisfied with the service that ADT provides, they will refund you the installation charge and any monitoring fees you’ve accrued.

The equipment that ADT offers with the traditional plan includes a wireless control panel, door sensors, and window sensors. For additional fees, you can add fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide monitoring equipment to any home security system. Security cameras or an additional motion detector may also be purchased separately.

The ADT video plan incorporates video surveillance with the all the features included in the other ADT alarm packages. The plan comes with free equipment installation and a Nest Learning Thermostat which is just one of the perks of paying $49.99 per month for this plan. Not only that, but this plan includes home automation features that let you control door locks, lighting, your thermostat, and your garage, remotely from the ADT Pulse interactive mobile app.

The options for the video security plan are more robust. In addition to the standard wireless control panel and door sensors and window sensors, you will also have the option of adding security cameras that you can access through the mobile app. With this, as well as all of ADT’s home security systems, it comes with 24/7 ADT monitoring service.

The Bad

A new ADT Customer will be able to take advantage of its lowest monitoring plan (Traditional) at $28.99 per month, however, this plan does not come with free equipment installation or the extended limited warranty. You will be required to sign a 36-month monitoring contract (24-month if you are a resident of California) which is unfortunate if you become dissatisfied with the alarm system after the 6-month money-back guarantee period.

Users of our site have had quite a bit to say aboutADT-Monitored Security and the customer service it provides. Several reviews proclaimed problems with sales reps not showing up to appointments they scheduled, not to mention the hours that some customers have been put on hold for. Other ADT customers using its monitoring services have mentioned that they were charged high cancellation fees as well as expensive rates for installation and service visits.

The Bottom Line

ADT Security Systems offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT Security Systems, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits.

While you can learn a lot by reading the ADT reviews on this site, you won’t have as much luck on the official ADT website. The security company is not very transparent about the pricing of the plans or equipment. For example, you are unable to see at a glance the price of motion detectors, additional control panels or carbon monoxide detectors. Potential customers should also be wary of what prices are shown. There are often additional fees that will raise the total bill when all is said and done.

We do not recommend ADT-Monitored Security to be your home security provider. There are many other companies out there that offer better customer service and are more affordable.     Very disappointed with emergency dispatchers, they have no training how to recognize the owners. They only go with 4 digit to recognize you. If you don’t remember that, you are out of luck. They have no common sense training neither no backup security quwaions. My first experience, worse one. Even My Chas bank employees 800 number are equipped to recognize you. Worse experince as owner, as owner should not have to go through this. I will have the solution soon if I have to wait for this 4 digit code in the mail…ADT leaving no choice to switch them and find more common sense security company. .

    Very bad all the way around. They sell adequated equipment, with no way to upgrade unless you buy new equipment. Customer service is attrocias. We had three accounts on three different properties. They totally screwed up the billing. We would pay, and then get a notice that we were past due, we would call make another payment, and then they would send us another past due note. I upgraded to an account advocate who was going to research and call me back in 24 hours and never called back. Called her a week later, and still no return call. Finally cancelled the account, and hoping to get a refund. Trully poor service all the way around.

    The ADT representative that installed the equipment in my home failed to mention a very important feature of the service plan: the city required a yearly fee for using ADT. I randonly received a $115.00 fine in the mail from the local police department. ADT was kind enough to give me a “credit” on my account of $67.50, even though I had already paid for my 3 year service contract. As a first time home buyer and user of ADT, I was furious! The negligence, ignorance, and lack of caring or respect from the representatives was disgusting. I would never recommend this company to anyone. Please use any other company besides this one!

    I asked for an estimate of the cost, they sent an installer who they said was only a technician. He not only unwired my existing alarm but left with it not working. He attempted to sell more products. As for as I know he is a commission sales person.

    As a person who leaves both positive and negative reviews, there is no hesitation when I write this. This is one of the worst companies I have ever done business with. From installation to discontinuation, my experience was negative. In all fairness, I have had 2-3 pleasant representatives speak for me out of about 20 phone calls to customer service. (which is why I gave it a 1 instead of a zero)

    Rushed through signing a contract (this is just what we talked about”), I signed a three year contract. The sensors didn’t even line up or cover all the entry points and the service still armed! If my grandson hadn’t left the door to the sun porch open one night, I would not have realized my house was still accessible. I went to turn off the alarm in the morning and I noticed the door ajar. Couldn’t believe my system said it was ready to arm and let me sleep thinking my alarm was working.

    My house was sold two years later and even though I could no longer utilize their services (new neighborhood covered by different carrier in bulk contract), I was required to pay $373.35 (a percentage of my outstanding contract, I believe it was 75%) as a penalty for early termination.

    I would NOT have used this company had I known they required a THREE YEAR contract. Doesn’t even sound like they have confidence in their own product when they have to force people to stay with them for such an extended period of time. You would think they would be confident people would WANT to renew! I guess they know… we wouldn’t renew!

    First of all, I was told over the phone that they would install 2 cameras, one inside and one outside, not true! They iconnected one tiny camera inside with a black wire for you to place anywhere you wanted. I asked the technician if he would mount the camera, he said no, you would have to pay extra for that service. When asked about the camera for the outside, he said, no, you just get one camera, if you want another one outside you need to pay extra. They only provided 2 sensors for the package, I was to decide if I wanted extra sensors for the windows and other doors, each extra sensor was $80 each. Technician was not helpful, very lazy, didn’t even put up the ADT sign or logos. Now 4 weeks passed and one of my sensors is not working, very bad company!

    They only have a 3 day trial period, and when I tried to cancel after 10 days of service they told me I have to pay for 3 years. Very sneaky company. Never again.

    We were relocated back in January 2018and ADT been double charge us since then till now, every time we call them,they promised will give us refund and its October now we still try to call them to get our money back, it’s the worst company ever.

    Very unprofessional. The representatives seems to work on commission. Very Ungenuine service. I was given lies about the product after researching, I found that the product was not for me. We called the representative to cancel theinstallation. He got upset for losing the sell and got overly aggressive and made us feel very uncomfortable. I do not recommend!!!!!!!

    I went through them on August 3rd. Today is October 13th. In the short amount of time they have costed me over 1000$ for unauthorized charges to my account. They sent out a refund for equipment that was taken out specifically so that i could get my $730 back that I wasn’teven supposed to pay because i opened an account with them at a “promotional time”. Didnt get it so when I called they said they sent it to a debit card in which i have never heard of in my life. Said they would locate it and put it in my account that i confirmed with them. A week later, nothing. I call again and they said that that refund is non-existent. Never in the system. Then I get a refund of $107 in my account a few days later. I call and they said it’s for the equipment they took out. I asked why it was only for $100. Their dumb response was “fee charges”. I called today and they said that they can give me the rest of the refund if I return the rest of ththe equipment that the installer had left while taking out some other equipment FOR THE 700 REFUND then proceeded to say “but you are unable to return them because it’s been longer than 30 days”..

    What a crap load of lies and misleading statements!!! Do not use this service!!!! After all the lies we are now bound by a contract!!! Very VERY unsatisfactory customer service!!! We were told we could connect through wifi and that our bill would be a certain amount every month and that is ACTUALLY not the case!!! I will not recommend this service to ANYONE!!!!!     A whole month and a few days trying to get an install 4 no shows on their part ~ office out of Albuquerque, rude managers one even called me threatening not to give me my deposit ~ The installer who came by was really nice ~ this was supposed to be a system take over … all my tabs worked awesomely with the new touch pad only question was the infrared cameras ~ which didn’t work the managers out of Albuquerque wanted the huge commission and told him to tell me everything had to be replaced… a system take over wasn’t possible and to lie to me ~ the installer wasn’t so crooked … we were his last job. He told me he had put in his notice and was going fishing after this job ~ ADT out of Albuquerque called threatened me out of the blue a day later and said they fired the installer and I had better cancel the appointment set for the 18th huh!!! I had never set one ???? I called and was talked into another try let’s just say all together a 4x no show nightmare … hours on the phone … ADT promised a 100.00 card for the nightmare as a we are sorry ~ weather or not we use them ~ LMAO now they are like ohhh…no… we don’t do that only for customers ~ so much for the apology ~ also trying to get my deposit back has been a continuances of the nightmare…. Don’t use these people ~ save yourself the headache… advice from the installer use ARLO or ring nest … ring is awesome ~ I use it as a secondary precaution to speak to whomever comes to the front door ~ Now trying Vivant home security so far I haven’t had headaches getting them here … they were honest about the system take over and needing new cameras and 1 break tab… My husband feels better having a company monitor our house … the other systems … such as ring and arlo are wonderful but it is up to you to call police if needed.

    I started with Protection ! and they were bought by ADT. I was happy with the service until ADT took over. I had them install cameras that I paid for and than when I moved I tried to cancel service and they are charging me $750. If the cameras had been free I would understand the charge but these are cameras that I paid for and the early termination charge was buried in the contract and never mentioned. Why would I agree to a contract for cameras that I paid for? Now I’m using Xfinity and its much cheaper per month and so far has been great.

    I haven’t had to call customer service before, but the one time I did the representative was not helpful and kind of rude. Also they lock you in to a 3 year agreement, but they are able to raise your rate each year after the 1st year. The fact that they would structure their agreement like that, is guaranteeing that the day my 3 years is up I will be switching services.

    ADT cameras u can unplug cant monatore u have to hope your wfi works the internet is working and it takes time to load if it does so if some ones at your door hope you have it set on telling you that or if you leave it on every car going by set off the phone i told them to get out the first week they said call the installers i did they said call adt my bank stopped the card they where billing to now i get un know caller on my cell phone its a bill collector saying i must pay for this for three years i would if it worked right and it wasn’t a peace of junk!

    Reached out to ADT to get a quote for my house. Rep gets on the line, and I tell him I’m trying to get a quote for a home I’m remodeling. He gets right into selling me a promotion for two doors when I have six doors on my house. When I interrupted him to tell him that I need to tell him what I want, he tells me to stop talking and let him finish. I asked for his manager and when I tried to explain the situation, his manager told me the same thing. Why would I ever do business with a firm that a) doesn’t listen and b) are insulting. The first rule in sales is to listen; the second rule is never to offend the prospective client.
