User Score

ADT offers professionally installed home security systems in 40 U.S. states. They do not offer home security in the following US states: Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire. Almost all equipment needs to be purchased upfront. Monthly monitoring fees start at $27.99 for basic home security, $52.99 to use the ADT app, and $58.99 for video monitoring.

Pros

Video Surveillance Option

ADT has a video plan option where for $58.99 per month, you get the standard security systems package along with a camera that includes video surveillance features that you can monitor through the ADT mobile app. Most home security service providers still do not offer video surveillance as a service. So if this is an important feature to you, you'll want to consider ADT.

ADT Mobile App

With the ADT app, you can disarm and arm your ADT home security system, receive email and text message alarm notifications, and control your home's smart devices like smart locks and motion sensors. According to the ADT home security systems website, the ADT app uses innovative Z-Wave technology.

ADT Guarantees

ADT offers a six-month money-back guarantee on installation and monitoring if you are unhappy with your current home security system. Additionally, according to the company's website, ADT offers a theft protection guarantee. If your home has a burglary while your ADT system is set, ADT will give you up to $500 towards your insurance deductible.

Cons

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Standard monitoring plans for new customers start at $27.99 for their traditional package and goes up to $58.99 for video monitoring. Those interested in the ADT mobile app or an outdoor/indoor camera, will need to pay more for the more comprehensive home security packages. The cost could end up being higher than other leading home security system providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

Undisclosed Information

Unlike other home security companies, like Protect America, ADT does not disclose how much added on equipment is. While you can see that the company offers three packages, it's difficult to see the distinctions and what equipment is offered in each package.

Negative ADT Home Security Reviews

On BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, ADT customer rate the company at 1.2 out of 10. Common complaints of ADT customers include sales and installation reps failing to show up to scheduled appointments, long wait times, additional charges, and high cancellation fees.

We have received over 1,500 negative ADT reviews from real customers. We never scrub reviews to make companies appear a certain way to potential buyers and negative reviews cannot be paid off by the company.

Our Recommendation

ADT offers a video surveillance option, a helpful mobile app, a money-back guarantee, and a theft protection guarantee. Additionally, ADT offers a variety of high-tech products with their monitoring service: digital control panel, cameras, video doorbells, smart locks, motion detectors, and more. However, when you look at the customer reviews left for ADT, the good is outweighed by contract and customer service issues.

Customers are charged high monthly fees for ADT security services and are usually locked into a long-term contract. Also, there have been a plethora of negative customer reviews regarding ADT customer service and professional installation.

At this time, we do not recommend ADT for home security because of their negative reviews and their undisclosed information. We recommend choosing a home security company that discloses pricing and package information. Check out our top companies here.

My experience with ADT has been terrible. A few things to be aware of before signing up with ADT: -Their "moving policy" is designed to keep you in a contract. For example, I signed a 36mo agreement but then moved out of the house where I set up service. I tried to simply move my existing service to my new address but they require you to sign a new contract for the same length of time. No exceptions. So in theory, if you never reach full term on your contract you are stuck renewing it every time you move to a new address. -Cancellation policy requires you to pay 75% of the remaining amount contracted. No exceptions. - Their 6-month money-back guarantee is not real: The stated guarantee - "We want you to be happy with your ADT service. If for any reason you're dissatisfied with our products or service, we’ll fully refund your installation and monitoring fees hassle-free*." I tried to execute this after four months of service and was denied. They reserve the right to try and fix any reason (product or service) related to your issue. Ultimately they did not let me out of the agreement. ADT seems to have predatory contracting strategies in place to keep you locked in. No one should sign an agreement with them.

After a complaint show on tv about a customer and after reading complaints on TrustPilot I tried to canceal my contract because the law permit it if in the delays, what I was. They did not and I could not contact them by phone. I sent a registered mail, still they take the amount on my card. I canceal my card, and complaint to MasterCard. Waiting for reply from MC. Stay away from ADT, very far away. Check TrustPilot review site where they have 73% of the lowest rating. You just read comments and you will understand. Check tv program in French "La Facture" from 19 Oct 19 Radio-Canada too. Here is already enough to understand if you scan through the comments.

ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!! Runaround, put you on hold kill your time out and drop off, they take your phone number and tell you that they will get in call you back if you drop off and never call you back after you inevitably drop off. Talk to a supervisor? It's easier to talk to The Wizard of Oz. And the whole time you were on hold the insult you with noisy recordings about how wonderful their service is. Then they have the nerve to try to sell you new services. If I had a time machine, I would use it to go back to the hour before I signed up for ADT. And I would throw the salesperson out! I've been on the phone over an hour to correct the simple billing problem

I submitted an online inquiry into ADT home monitoring services. It was immediately followed by a phone call, the person on the other end quickly wanted to set up a " consultation visit" as he spoke he asked for my social security number to "verify" my identity. I told him I did not want to give that information because I did not want my credit pulled for a consultation. He said okay and asked if I could give my birth date to verify my identity I said I could provided my credit WAS NOT pulled. He agreed and proceeded with the phone call. Within half an hour I received a notification stating I had received a "hard inquiry" on my credit from them. I called back cancelled the consultation appointment and expressed my anger at having my credit pulled. I was told it would be escalated and they would review the tape and if in fact I said no to the credit pull they would retract it and send me a letter within 3 days. I have not heard back from them and it's been 9 business days. I contacted the company again this morning and inquired about the decision and was told my retraction had been denied and there was nothing more they could do. I stand firm that I "NEVER AUTHORIZED A CREDIT PULL". I don't believe anyone listened to the phone call, I think it is a hypothetical process where they prey on consumers who feel they have little recourse. I ask that ADT be held accountable for their fraudulent actions and consumers beware!

Called ADT to cancel and you are give nothing but attitude and they steal another month out of you just to cancel. So run don't walk to another security system.

I am having to move my business out of my current location due to the virus. I do not have a new location for this business, so it will most likely permanently close. They are saying I have to pay $1914 to finish out my contract. I do not have that to pay from a permanently closed business. They said I could relocate to a new place to avoid that fee. I said I might find a new temporary place for the business where I could relocate it eventually, but I have no idea where or when. They said to relocate to that new temporary place, I have to sign a NEW three year contract. It won't even be a three year lease, which means I'll have to pay another $2k once I move out of that place or sign another 3 year contract. So this sounds like blackmail at this point. Sign a 3 year contract with us or pay $2k because I am unable to continue business in my current location. No one has been able to help me. 5 times I have been disconnected for no reason after being passed around from department to department. During this global pandemic, this is some real terrible customer service.

I couldn't even begin to say how disappointing, rude and just downright greedy this company is!! My mom had to cancel her service because she is having to sell her home and moving out of state. When my parents moved into the home a year ago they ended up signing a 3 year contract, this was going to be their forever home. When my mom called to notify them she was needing to cancel the service and selling the home and moving out of state they just told her they are charging her $700 since she decided to move . She explained to them she HAS TO MOVE, SHE HAS NO CONTROL OVER THE SITUATION, my Dad died in a car accident. After speaking to the manager and explaining the situation & money is very tight right now for her with all the hospital bills and she has absolutely NO control over the situation; he just told her too bad, pay $700. Would not even negotiate a lower fee or offer any solution, just pay $700! I have used ADT in the past as well and never had a good experience with them either. All they do is try to over sell you and scare you into more than you really need and when you do need something their customer service is horrific. After the way they treated my mom and had her in tears after the call & my experience with them, I would NEVER recommend doing business with these people, all they care about is making a buck and no customer service!!

I have them monitoring an existing system in home we purchased 5 yrs ago. It wasn't too bad at $45/month initially, but has crept up to now $72--so I called to cancel or see about reduction. They offer $5/month off or $10 if I commit to a 3 yr contract. I say, no thanks--lets just cancel. Transferred to another, then another "Account Manager" who now can go down to $29/month for 6 months, but the.... I say no thanks, just cancel. Then come the questions: Do you get a home insurance discount? What will be your plan in this difficult time? Don't you want your family protected? What will be your plan? I say--what does any of this have to do with canceling? Just please cancel. On hold while she says canceling may render any of existing equipment inoperable and all. 20 min later, says canceled. I will NEVER, EVER use them again to treat a customer they said they valued like that!!

They stopped by on average 2 times a week, after being told several occasions that I was under contract with another security company and I was movng them to my new home. The whole ordeal was unnerving to be at work and see these guys at your door or in your yard while you are at work. The were even brazing enough to steal the sign out of my current companies sign out of my yard. When comfronted by my wife about it and her threatening to call the cops because they were caught on video, they again returned to my house while we were at work and replaced the sign. When I did get the system installed I guess I should have read the fine print for the contract, in order to cancel this service you have to pay 75% which I was told is 1010 dollars to get out of contract, I ask the sales person the day I signed up what happened if I decide not to keep it , the reply was hope you don’t need to cancel. I received a mailer advertising $27/month and $99 for the install. Included two door sensors and 6 windows which is exactly what I have, so perfect. They send out a very aggressive sales rep, not an install crew, and he starts to quote me $3,200 and would not accept my answer that I do not need all the extra stuff (for example, $1,000 for smoke a carbon monoxide sensors -- I already have them! And they are $25 on Amazon!) No where on the mailer did it mention that they couldn't do the $27/month if I did not have a dial up home phone - maybe should have known that, but they should have clarified this on the phone with me - and this was going to increase the $27 to $60/month. They definitely use a lot of scare tactics and the whole thing just felt -- icky. ADT had already taken the installation fee before the ADT tech had gotten to my house. The customer rep told me it would cost $27.99 month charge with a 36 month contract, but when the tech came he said $50.00. By that time I felt I couldn't trust them. I already have an unmonitored alarm system in my home. The ADT tech disconnected my system, he said to see if his system would connect. When I informed the ADT tech that I didn't want their service, he said he would put my alarm system like he found it. He didn't put the battery back and he cut my wires. The icing on the cake was I had to have a verbal password to even TALK to the accounting department that closes accounts. You can only get that password by mail!? And there is no other way to identify me? Every other company under the sun asks for your name, your mother's name, your maiden name, the last 4 of your your social security number, your date of birth. There are any number of different ways to identify you. I'm pretty sure it benefits ADT by getting another month out of an unhappy customer. Then you need to cancel the account 30 days in advance. All I have to say is thank God I have one month and 7 days to closest account forever. That gives me 7 days to get the stupid password by mail. I am done with ADT forever!

I signed up with ADT 2/18/2020, big mistake. woman I talked to on the phone was very high pressure and pushy. Asked for credit card number and when I asked if I was being charged for anything was told no. Rep came to the house and made his pitch, over $400.00 for equipment, which was standard equipment plus I wanted a camera out front on my house. Camera (299.00) was plugged into an outside outlet with no battery backup, so if it's unplugged it's virtually useless. Then I got my bank statement and there was an extra charge from ADT of $107.51 that I knew nothing about. When I called the first time I was told it was for equipment installation, second time I called was told it was to hold the appointment I made?? It's too late to cancel, and I blame myself for ignoring all the warning signs. ADT's business practices are suspect at best, and my advise would be to stay away from them.

Within 6 months of installation in June of 2018, neighbors on either side of me and in front of me became invisible to my cameras except in 'live view' mode (9 cameras). Property owner walked up to my front door, passing numerous cameras along the way - not one recorded him. I checked my 'activity log' afterwards and the system failed to detect me walking through my home and the 'open door' - system had been completely 'spoofed'. Verdict? Pulse is only useful for catching 'low hanging fruit'. Much more to this story but unable to relate here, like the day I was supposed to receive a free upgrade to the newer Command System - was a complete scam trying to get me to dish out $3,200. To add insult to injury, 'bad actors' are still gaining entry into my home, even after changing out all of the door locks in May, 2019. I'm pretty sure I know who it is but can't prove it.

With the alarm on, they broke in, took their jolly 'ol time to steal my furnace and water heater, and the police did not show up for over 2 hours! Part of the ADT hype is what a great relationship they have with the police. Well, didn't help much. I honestly think somebody with ADT messed up.
