Founded in 1874, ADT is one of the oldest home security companies in the world. While it didn’t get into security systems until later, it has a long track record as a security company. With that much experience, ADT-Monitored Security is bound to know what it’s talking about with securing your home, right? While the company one of the largest in the home security space in the nation, many consumers lately have been leaving ADT reviews and have expressed concerns over the equipment, the customer service, and other services offered by the alarm company. Hopefully, our quick Good & Bad breakdown will help give you an idea of what to expect with ADT Security Systems.

The Good

ADT offers three base home security system packages; Traditional, Control, and Video. Each system is professionally installed by an ADT security pro.

For those shopping for home security systems, you can get started with ADT-Monitored Security for just $28.99 per month for its Traditional package. These fees are is slightly lower than the majority of security companies out there. This service comes with limited features but each security system comes with 24/7 ADT monitoring service for fire, carbon monoxide, flood, and burglary and a 6-month money-back guarantee. If during this time, you are at all dissatisfied with the service that ADT provides, they will refund you the installation charge and any monitoring fees you’ve accrued.

The equipment that ADT offers with the traditional plan includes a wireless control panel, door sensors, and window sensors. For additional fees, you can add fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide monitoring equipment to any home security system. Security cameras or an additional motion detector may also be purchased separately.

The ADT video plan incorporates video surveillance with the all the features included in the other ADT alarm packages. The plan comes with free equipment installation and a Nest Learning Thermostat which is just one of the perks of paying $49.99 per month for this plan. Not only that, but this plan includes home automation features that let you control door locks, lighting, your thermostat, and your garage, remotely from the ADT Pulse interactive mobile app.

The options for the video security plan are more robust. In addition to the standard wireless control panel and door sensors and window sensors, you will also have the option of adding security cameras that you can access through the mobile app. With this, as well as all of ADT’s home security systems, it comes with 24/7 ADT monitoring service.

The Bad

A new ADT Customer will be able to take advantage of its lowest monitoring plan (Traditional) at $28.99 per month, however, this plan does not come with free equipment installation or the extended limited warranty. You will be required to sign a 36-month monitoring contract (24-month if you are a resident of California) which is unfortunate if you become dissatisfied with the alarm system after the 6-month money-back guarantee period.

Users of our site have had quite a bit to say aboutADT-Monitored Security and the customer service it provides. Several reviews proclaimed problems with sales reps not showing up to appointments they scheduled, not to mention the hours that some customers have been put on hold for. Other ADT customers using its monitoring services have mentioned that they were charged high cancellation fees as well as expensive rates for installation and service visits.

The Bottom Line

ADT Security Systems offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT Security Systems, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits.

While you can learn a lot by reading the ADT reviews on this site, you won’t have as much luck on the official ADT website. The security company is not very transparent about the pricing of the plans or equipment. For example, you are unable to see at a glance the price of motion detectors, additional control panels or carbon monoxide detectors. Potential customers should also be wary of what prices are shown. There are often additional fees that will raise the total bill when all is said and done.

We do not recommend ADT-Monitored Security to be your home security provider. There are many other companies out there that offer better customer service and are more affordable.     I want to make it absolutely plain and clear. ADT is a complete and utter sham. They don’t care about you. I’ve been a customer for over 10 years and found out by accident that my system was not being monitored for a period of over a year. Nobody from ADT every knew or cared to contact me.

    I became aware of a problem when discovered that there was a technical issue by accident – after setting off false-alarms, I started calling technical support and troubleshooting. Only by my own actions, not ADT I determined that my system was not being monitored.

    What I discovered completely shocked me. Apparently, this is normal and my own fault. If I don’t verify my system is not active, its my own fault not ADT. In fact, they don’t bother or care if your system works or not. In my case, I pay over $40/month in monitoring – but this doesn’t mean I’m actually being monitored- if I have a problem on my end, they LITERALLY CANNOT TELL, OR DON’T CARE TO TELL YOU and will refer you to the fineprint at the back of your contract telling you it is not their responsibiity to check.

    I found this completely shocking and disturbing. Literally anybody can just cut the physical cord to ADT alarmed systems and nobody would know or care. For this reason, I would recommend that people avoid ADT. I was a loyal paying customer for 10 years and after numerous letters and complaints, they simply ignored me.

    Warning!!!! Do not get this system. They have a new panel out, which already is failing. There are so many other companies that are more professional. The retention team will say anything to make you stay, or hope that you call back. The sales teams lies about their product. the billing and tech support don’t know what they are doing, and constantly transfer you. This is a US based company, It was bought out by an American, * google it, you will find out!! ) The bottome line> this is the worst customer service ever

    Awful customer service. I tried calling 3 times and was told that a representative would call me within 12-24 hours. It’s now been a week and I still haven’t received a call. Terrible service.

    Trying to transfer service from one aparrment to another and was met with resistence. Adt, adt subcontractors are binding me to a contractual agreement when they will not install service. Was told I have to wait 59 days for a 13 month contractual agreement to end and am still obligated for another 23 months. Spoke with several representatives but to no avail. Refuses to release me from contract and will not provide service until after the 59 days. If adt or their subcontractors do not install in rentals, why did they install service in the first place. Dissatisfied customer.

    We will be moving into our new home in September. I filled out a few online inquires to receive a call about quotes. A rep called me and was very unprofessional. Did not ask me any questions, just wanted to “sell” the promotions first, I was immediately thrown off.. The other companies who called me , were very professional and asked questions first about what we were looking for. needless to say I advised the rep to take my name off of their calling list and judging by the reviews, it was a Great decision.

    Paying on a 3 year contract with totally inferior camera equipment that DOES NOT EVEN show faces with much resolution. Absolutely no point in paying for these inferior products. They did not inform me I was LOCKED into a 3 year contract with them when I paid $850 for their crappy equipment.
    Guess I’m the fool for not reading the contract and now stuck with their INFERIOR system
    The day it’s up I’m done with ADT – which stands for absolutely disastrous technology.

    10 negative star for ADT!! I never argue with any company on phone before until ADT!.
    I was not believe in negative customer reviews for ADT until today. First of all, i would like to get security system for my first home (owner). We got the promotion deal though flyer mail and i was contact ADT the day before the technician came to my house for installation. I was spoke to the lady on phone and make sure about deal that they offer us which is in low price if compared to other company deal at that time. That is why make me wonder about how can they do this deal while i search online for ADT packages is only about $40-55 monthly service fee. I asked the lady on phone more than 3 times to make sure that i will get the price they providing us and all the equipments that indicated. she said to me “ Absolutely mam, this offer only from flyer mail, new customer who contact us within 30 days after received the mail so we will provide you $$ this monthly price with no activation fee, free equipments which are including over $874 plus digital keypad with battery back up, motion sensor, two keychain remotes with panic button, 15 Free pre-wired door/window sensor or 7 wireless door/window sensor, warranty included on all equipments, NO HIDDEN FEES OR ADDITIONAL SERVICE TO BUY!!!, $99 for installation fee instead of $199 and 100 visa gift card. I was told by 2 person on phone the same thing, same deal, no extra costs. The first one was the lady and the second person (according to the first lady was her manager) is her manager who asked me about how many doors and windows we want a sensor for so i said totally will be 6 windows and 5 doors. Before they get my credit card information to hold on for the service i asked them again about what do i need for install and for tthis service, she said we need only two things from you mam which are dry wall house and electric. No other things because our equipment and service is wireless, no wall puncture, no landline or anythings. we serve the service by Central monitor service. So i ask one last time if i have to pay anything else for this deal? she confirmed by “ No” again. On the installation day, the technician came and asked me if i have any question for him or for service so i repeat to him again about what i will get and how much i will have to pay. The answer that i got was totally different from what i was informed on phone. i have to get ADT pulse which is more than $50 a month because if i want the service that they gave me an offer i needed a “ LANDLINE” which is 2 out of 20 others security company needed and they never informed me even i asked more than 3 times about if there is anything else i need. I make sure multiple times because the price they gave me is so cheap!. The technician ( he is nice and tried to help me out but sorry it doesn”t work for us and we feel like we were foolish to got lie by the service sale) was agree with me that they should tell me the true and not hidden anything by purpose. He tried to help me to get the price that i was told and talk to the 3rd lady on phone. The lady on phone which is his manager blame on me that if i don’t have landline, i have to contact Comcast for one and pay them! I said if i have to get landline from Comcast so why i not just get their home security service with no landline and cost extra only a couple bucks from our internet. She said why you will get Comcast when you can get a best service with ADT. We are the best service for home security system! ( i don’t know where she get this information from that they are the best company and they low rate other company like that which is i never hear any other sales doing that before. They only said other company but not specific compare like this lady did). she also blame on me about why i don’t have landline! Why people need landline now? Wake up girl!!! I am not in 90s and not 80 years old grandma who is needed home phone while i can use my cell and wireless so she said “ Oh well!! If you need home security service system, you will definitely looking to pay about $45-65 a months anyway. No company will provide you for $27.99 a month! So why you guys send out the 27.99 promotion and tell us we can get it???? but want us to get ADT pulse anyway!!!

We at stuck in a contract with them for the next 2 years with the crappiest equipment possible because they wanted to charge us again for the same equipment we bought in the first place

    BEWARE and stay away from ADT. They are criminals. I signed up with them because the house I purchased already had equipment and the sales guy, Ramon, said that it was compatible. The install tech ended up removing my equipment and botched the new installation. I called the supervisor Chris C, and he assured me that they would contact me after the 4th of July holiday to get it corrected. That date came and went…nothing. A month passed and still the system wasn’t working. I called to cancel the contract and they refuse to cancel it saying it is passed the 3 day cancellation time. After dozens of unanswered calls, texts, emails, and online chats to get it corrected…it is still not working and they are still holding me to this fradulent contract. It’s almost comical how quickly my calls were returned before I signed that fradulant contract. ADT is the ABSOLUTELY THE WORST company that I’ve ever dealt with and I hope no one else ever has to go through that. They seriously need to be shut down for their unscrupulous business practices. Even their positive google reviews were bought and paid for. I’m betting this one will be removed within days, but I will repost it, so they can no longer steal from other customers.

    I hope that everyone heeds the warnings about ADT. There is no reason anyone should be locked into an expensive contract with a terrible company in order to pay more for substandard service and outdated equipment. There are lots of options that do not require a contract – try any of those first. These companies keep customers based on being good companies with which to do business instead of holding customers to worthless contracts with huge exit costs.

    ADT (and Defender) is a joke and scam. They hang up on you, miss appointments you took day off from work to be home for, lie and say they were there only to change and say the called and were told system is working again and then change the story again (to the very believable) it was the wrong number but the person said it was you and said the system was up (real believable someone said they were me????). Now they wont get the system out of my house?

    Hang on to your wallet ADT has raised my rate 7% or more for each of the past 5 years resulting in a 37% increase over that time period. Over the past 10 years my rate has increased over 114%!!! I have basic service with no extras like video cameras, etc. Every year I get the same story from ADT claiming they’ve invested a lot of money in technology and I must now pay for that. Every ADT customer pays whether they use a feature or not. I’ve seen no changes or improvement in my service yet the rate increases keep coming.

    Yes, the service does work but it is a terrible value. I’ve located a competitor in my area who delivers the same service for 60% less than ADT. ADT should be ashamed of their annual rate hikes. Beware of this if you do elect to sign up with them.

    I have been an ADT Customer for 14 years. After paying $70/month for their Pulse service, I sold my home and canceled the service. They said no problem your service is turned off, but we require a 30 day cancellation notice. So I owed about 2 weeks which comes to about $61 for a service I had turned off. Wait, how is 1 month of service $70 and 2 weeks of service $61 even though it was deactivated.

    Now lets talk about response time. Years ago a motion sensor tripped and the police where there in no time. Last year a door sensor tripped and it was a different story. They wait a good long time now before calling the police. If this had been a real break-in I would have been cleaned out.

    Misleading 6-month satisfaction guarantee. The installers (Defenders) lock you into their service contract, and believe they have a right to charge you in full for the contract after three days of service (which is not enough time to test their service). It’s August 8, 2018; they installed on July 27th, you can open doors and the alarm will not sound and, when it sounds (we tested twice), ADT gets the signal but they don’t act on it so they don’t call. So much for all the hoopla on five monitoring centers. When asked why they did not call after an alarm, their reply is essentially an ‘oops we did not get a signal’. Horrible service – one hour on the phone to get to someone who finally offered to send a technician. Lousy, could-not-care-less attitude of staff because they know you are ‘locked’ as a hostage into their contract. Stay away!

    Decided to call ADT after I bought a House and got a coupon in the mail. Was promised 6 cameras (3 indoor and 3 outdoor) by the salesman on the phone. He also said since I was a new customer al I had to pay was 99 installation fee and the monthly service was 27 a month for 36 months contract. Service tech shows up to instal what I ordered. Tells me that adt doesn’t have outdoor cameras. Indoor only. Then he also tells me to install the cameras it will be an extra 299 up front and the monthly service would be 58 a month not 27 that I was told on the phone with the salesman. Glad I asked questions before anything was installed. Don’t get suckered into their rip off game. Bad company with a lot of hidden info and false info given by the salesman. Stay away!!!

    This is my Part 2 review. I have had a constant battle with The Defenders, which is an “authorized” Dealer of ADT. What I realized a long time ago, and then again this morning is tht ADT has absolutely no control over the “Authorized” Dealer regarding false advertising, fraudulent activity, and the most ridiculous Customer service that I have ever been a part of.

    I have had the unfortunate opportunity to speak with the Defenders several times now, and
    at every point they have not only flat out lied about the service but have actually told me that they have nothing to say to me, that they would love to leave me on hold all day, that the Supervisor refuses to get on the phone because essentially they have better things to do, and then finally today they transferred me around and then ultimately told me that they refuse to give me the corporate address to the Defenders so that I may request a copy of my calls to provide to an Attorney and then hung up on. Apparently, the Customer Service Reps/Billing Specialists/Supervisors, etc.. have no last names or Employee #’s. Which is very interesting, but then again they have no main address either so I guess I should not be surprised.

    I have every intention of hiring an Attorney because of all of the lies and fraudulent activity of The Defenders and ultimately ADT because the Defenders are an “authorized” dealer of ADT. I have been told by ADT that they cannot help me and I have to speak to the defenders every time I call in, but the Defenders do not possess the ability to handle a customer service call, pull calls, or provide addresses. SO, that puts me in a pretty horrible position considering ADT passes the buck to them so clearly ADT is also incapable of handing anything.

    I would have considered keeping the service of ADT but I cannot be a part of a company that allows this treatment of their customers.

    I would suggest that ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE that is thinking of getting ADT, or ever dealing with the “authorized” dealer the Defenders think twice because both companies have no clue what customer resolution means, how to accomplish it, how to retain a customer, or what it means to tell Customers the truth about the billing/service/contract. There should be accountability for any company. Both ADT and the Defenders will just transfer you back and forth, treat you horribly and guarantee a horrible experience. BY FAR the worst two companies I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Save yourself and go with another company if you believe in effective communication and friendly customer service!

    Doing business with ADT is the biggest mistake you could ever make. Their customer service is horrible. You will pay for everything wrong with their equipment. They’re customer service department are robots that are trained to tell you that you’ve signed a contract. If you think that signing a contract means 36 months of continued service, you are wrong. If you find yourself having to move, your contract starts over. ADT doesn’t care if your house burned down with your equipment in it on the 35th month; when you move, you will be forced to sign a contract that starts you over at month zero. If you refuse…. Have fun paying the $1000 cancelation fee.
    Calling their customer service will show how inhumane this company is. They don’t care about the customer. If your house is broken into, their service just adds to the normal delay in 911 dispatch. Your items will still be stolen. You are better off paying for a contract free monitoring system, so the perpetrators can at least be identified and brought to justice.

    So every time you move, they make you sign another 3 year contract or pay termination fees. It’s essentially a scam to wrap you up until you are stuck somewhere. As a student who moves, this has been a giant waste of time, money, and patience

    I spent about 2 hours on hold, to talk to 4 different people, in order to try and cancel my services, because we just never use the system! I was told by 3 of the 4 that they, too, had Great Danes and still found the service useful, go figure. We were then informed that if we could not remember our password from six years ago, we would have to wait for it to be delivered via USPS. There was no other way to validate our account. From there, after digging out our paperwork, to find our password, so we didn’t have to s0wnd another 2 hours on hold, we spent another 45 minutes on hold to cancel! Worst customer service ever!
