Founded in 1874, ADT is one of the oldest home security companies in the world. While it didn’t start getting into security systems until later, it has a long track record as a security company. With that much experience, ADT-Monitored Security is bound to know what it’s talking about with securing your home, right? While the company one of the largest in the home security space in the nation, many consumers lately have been leaving ADT reviews and have expressed concerns over the equipment, the customer service, and other services offered by the alarm company. Hopefully our quick Good & Bad breakdown will help give you an idea of what to expect with ADT Security Systems.

The Good

For those shopping for home security systems, you can get started with ADT-Monitored Security for just $28.99 per month for its Traditional package. These fees are is slightly lower than the majority of security companies out there. This service comes with limited features but all plans come with a 6-month money back guarantee. If during this time, you are at all dissatisfied with the service that ADT provides, they will refund you the installation charge and any monitoring fees you’ve accrued.

The equipment that ADT offers with the traditional plan includes a wireless control panel, door sensors, and window sensors. For an additional fee, you can add fire and smoke monitoring as well as carbon monoxide monitoring.

The ADT video plan comes with free equipment installation and a Nest Learning Thermostat which is just one of the perks of paying $49.99 per month for this plan. Not only that, but this plan includes home automation features that let you control door locks, lighting, your thermostat, and your garage, remotely from the ADT Pulse interactive mobile app.

The options for the video security plan are more robust. In addition to the standard wireless control panel and door sensors and window sensors, you will also have the option for adding security cameras that you can access through the mobile app. With this, as well as all of ADT’s home security systems, it comes with 24/7 ADT monitoring.

The Bad

New ADT Customers will be able to take advantage of its lowest monitoring plan (Traditional) at $28.99 per month, however, this plan does not come with free equipment installation or the extended limited warranty. You will be required to sign a 36-month monitoring contract (24-month if you are a resident of California) which is unfortunate if you become dissatisfied with the alarm system after the 6-month money-back guarantee period.

Users of our site have had quite a bit to say aboutADT-Monitored Security and the customer service it provides. Several reviews proclaimed problems with sales reps not showing up to appointments they scheduled, not to mention the hours that some customers have been put on hold for. Other ADT customers using its monitoring services have mentioned that they were charged high cancellation fees as well as expensive rates for installation and service visits.

The Bottom Line

ADT Security Systems offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT Security Systems, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits.

While you can learn a lot by reading the ADT reviews on this site, you won’t have as much luck on the official ADT website. The company is not very transparent about the pricing of the plans or equipment. For example, you are unable to see at a glance the price of motion detectors, additional control panels or carbon monoxide detectors.

We do not recommend ADT-Monitored Security to be your home security provider. There are many other companies out there that offer better customer service and are more affordable.     Do not go with ADT – there are so many other options available that are cheaper with smaller contract commitments. Even if you move and you relocate with them, they require you to start a whole new 36 month contract. Their cancellation policy is outrageous and they will nickle and dime you in other ways.

    I had called to install this system, long story short ADT never called me to reschedule my appointment like they said since they had schedule me for a day I told them not too. They didn’t send my confirmation email, but they did take my money right there and than. Something told me read the reviews after reading more bad than good review’s I called to cancel. The lady over the phone was really rude, like reviewer’s had mentioned also my money will take 30 days to get refunded. I’m just glad I didn’t go through with it thanks to all the reviews!

    We made an appointment to add ADT home security and spent 4 hours go over everything and a time slot for them to come out… They have called me everyday foe 3 days trying to back out of time slot and then said we can’t be there and I have already taken off work… didn’t even try to keep me as a customer… Manager said just sorry and I want them taken care of me in a crisis…

    When you sign up for this company, they transfer you to Defenders/Protect your home who do not communicate well. They don’t use your correct billing but blame you and then submit you to a 3rd party company. It is a horrible situation.

    The only activity we ever got out of the system was if you false alarms while we were on vacation. When I tried to cancel the service they offered me a much lower rate. I took that rate for a period of time and then after several months I increase the back to the operate. When I call to have them reverse that charge they would not do it.     DO NOT USE ADT!!!! I WAS ALMOST SHOT!!! I woke in the middle of the night with our alarm going off stating the lower garage exterior door was breached. ADT called and argued with me whether the alarm was going off saying no alarms had been tripped, OKAY, why would ADT call???? She fought with me on the phone whether to send the police, luckily I had it setup to notifiy our local police. I told the operate I was scared and she never offered to send the police she continue to argue with me. I was BEYOND floored being I work in a emergency service most my life.
    When you awake from a deep sleep and the alarm is sounding, the last thing you want is the company that should be protecting you is arguing with you.
    Needless to say, I had to check my property myself and as I walked down the sidewalk I was confronted by two police officers with guns. Thank God for our heros, if it had been an actual break-in I likely would of been dead.
    We called ADT two weeks ago and they said a supervisor would call us back, they still haven’t called.
    The alarm system has not worked properly since day one, we have had a tech out 3 times. I walked into the house one day all the way into the kitchen and the system never went off even with it armed.
    BIGGEST MISTAKE I HAVE MADE IS USING ADT. They could care less about your safety and security, they are just a bunch of low paid telephone operators that don’t care.
    Good luck trying to get out of your contract, eveb with a recording of them arguing with me they say we can’t cancel. I plan to sue them for emotional distress because I haven’t felt safe since that night she argued.
    All I want is out of my contract to go with an alarm company that is professional and knows what they are doing.
    DO NOT USE ADT, YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!! SO MANY COMPLAINTS!

    Your equipment is sold to you by defender a separate company from ADT. Your equipment will run you about $1300.00 for a house with about 9 windows and a patio along with the initial $104.00 initial fee as advertised.. The more windows you have the more you pay. Shock sensors cost more.
    About 3 days after installation your monthly monitoring rate will be collected. If you don’t pay for all the equipment at one time your monthly equipment charge will be about $300.00 per month plus your monitoring fee. Don’t let them install any equipment until they explain the prices because I found out after. I told the to come and get everything after the system half worked for 2 day. Each technician visit after the firs will cost you.

    I’ve had service with ADT for over two years with barely a hiccup. There was no hard sell when I had it installed and both the panel and the remote app work smoothly. Fortunately, there’s been no break-ins but I’ve inadvertently set the alarm off and alarm & notification just worked. There was a minimum contract period but I paid in advance and I can’t really think of anything to complain about.

    Sales rep said it would take 40 minuets, 3-1/2 hours later we were finally signed up and then spent another 2 hours for the install!! Had some problems with the internet connection and getting hold of someone was impossible. Finally got hold of the sales rep who tried to contact a service guy who eventually got back to us. Website is awful and even after signing up I get no reply BUT they have been sending letters and emails to update my CC info. Hopefully a live person will contact me so I can get my questions answered. I can only hope!! DO NOT BUY THIS SYSTEM!

    They totallt ripped off my 87 year old mother. I was one day late in cancelling this because after installation she couldn’t really handle it. So the bottom line is that they don’t give you that much time to cancel like they say. It was like 2 or e days. But they don’t tell you that. They gave her enough alarm equipment for a mansion. She was taken advantage of. When I called them with her there, they said I was 1 day late. I was mortified. I could not believe that at the end of the call she was charges 3,323.00. For cancelling and that includes the equipment. They wouldn’t come and take it. They tricked her into paying for it. I was transferred to 5 different departments. Don’t use this company. They are horrible!

    This company is a rip off. I was over charged on my bank card after I spoke with a manger to install for $99 dollars this company the very next day charge my bank cared again stating that is was for equipment which I did not authorize. Then I told them to cancel and pick up there equipment for them to say you stuck with this contract if you don’t cancel in 3days. ADT is ripping people off. DO NOT FOOL WITH THIS COMPANY AT ALL. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE GHETTO AND UNPROFESSIONAL AND WILL NOT TELL THE TRUTH. THEY GIVE YOU THE RUN AROUND WHEN YOU TRY TO CANCEL THEY KNOW WHAT THEIR DOING IN ORDER FOR THEM TO KEEP CHARGING YOU AND MAKING MONEY OFF OD YOU EVEN THOUGH YOU DO NOT WANT THERE SERVICES.     Absolutely absurd. We called to cancel our services prior to our 3 year contract being over, so we knew we were going to get hit pretty hard with cancellation fees (totally okay with paying the cancellation fees). What we were not okay was the continuous lies and deception the employees gave us.

    Our first call was initiated on Dec. 19th, 2017 (the day the house was being sold) to cancel the services. On that day, we were told the final amount due and that it would be auto-debited from our account on the following month when our normal monthly payment was typically auto-debited.

    In January, we watched for the cancellation to hit the account, but it didn’t. Instead, they billed us our normal monthly amount. Immediately, we called to find out what was going on. This time we were told, oh yes we see you cancelled, but there is a 30 day window before the services are actually cancelled.

    Okay, fine, but will the amount for cancellation now be reduced? The representative stated with great certainty, yes since you paid January’s monthly amount your cancellation amount will reflect that and then proceeded to give us the new cancellation terms.

    At that time, we requested our checking account info be removed, as we wanted a paper invoice mailed to us, for our records and to be sure no more payments were taken from us without our being aware of them. The representative promised an invoice was being sent in the mail that day, so we could pay the final balance.

    However, that bill never arrived. Instead, I discovered they “sent” (it was never sent anywhere except our online portal) us a February bill for the monthly amount due and increased the cancellation amount by $50 without ever notifying us OR sending the bill we had requested in the first place.

    Thanks for wanting payments, but not sending bills and lying to us the entire time. We would have happily paid the amount initially agreed upon. Now, not so much.

    I’m sure this review won’t make ADT’s homepage, but this is by far the worst security system. I wish I could give them negative starts. For one, the sales reps lie. For example, I asked the rep before purchasing, if there were push notifications, through the app, and he told me yes. This is very important to me, as I like to be notified (via app) when a door opens or the alarm is triggered. I also asked, was the motion sensor pet-friendly, also yes. Well since the rep did a wonderful job at lying, I ended up getting this crappy service. The motion sensor is NOT pet-friendly. I can’t even turn my alarm on when I’m away, because my dog walking passed will trigger the alarm to go off. What’s the point of having a security system right? Also, there were no push notifications through the app. I had to literally create an alert for each door, (i.e, back door open, back door closed, front door open, front door closed, etc) to get an email notification. Do you know how annoying it is to get 100+ emails from ADT a day? Well, ADT now has push notifications through the app, but guess what, there is no way to stop the emailed alerts. Oh, another complaint, all of the equipment is outdated. The push pad isn’t even touchscreen. The customer service reps have absolutely no clue as to what they are doing. I called about the motion sensor, and the rep told me to turn my sensor upside down. Like what am I paying for? Then I asked about the notifications on a different occasion, and he told me to create an email box that I won’t use, so my notifications go there. I am so sick of ADT. So now I’m stuck for 36 months with a service I hate that I can’t turn on while I’m away, and a crap ton of unnecessary emails.

    Horrible company. Sales rep never mentioned the 6 month money back guarantee, no mention of the three year contract. Oh you CAN cancel the contract but you have to pay the contract in full to cancel it. Worthless customer service. Made a payment on he phone, the employee couldn’t verify any of my information. I refuse to give out my banking information to any one, even if I call them myself, if they can’t verify information they should already have on file. They are CONS. Worthless company.

    When I got the service to begin with, I was told the installation was free. When the guy got to my house, to get the entire house installed cost $800. I was told by the installer that they had to have my account number but they would not sign me up for automatic payments unless I wanted that. He did not explain that the equipment had to come out of my account so I was looking at my account today and saw $400 was taken out of account from them. When I called, the lady said she couldn’t do anything about it. I am a very understanding person, but this is irritating and they should be able to just send payments trough the mail instead of automatic payments. Would not recommend them to anyone! If it wasn’t for me spending $800 on equipment, I would already have cancelled.

    We contacted ADT for a consultation. It was never stated that we wanted to sign up for service or schedule an installation. However, the company still charged our account $105. They are now saying it will take up to 30 days to refund me money that they should not have taken in the first place. Please do not use this company.
