Founded in 1874, ADT is one of the oldest home security companies in the world. While it didn’t get into security systems until later, it has a long track record as a security company. With that much experience, ADT-Monitored Security is bound to know what it’s talking about with securing your home, right? While the company one of the largest in the home security space in the nation, many consumers lately have been leaving ADT reviews and have expressed concerns over the equipment, the customer service, and other services offered by the alarm company. Hopefully, our quick Good & Bad breakdown will help give you an idea of what to expect with ADT Security Systems.

The Good

ADT offers three base home security system packages; Traditional, Control, and Video. Each system is professionally installed by an ADT security pro.

For those shopping for home security systems, you can get started with ADT-Monitored Security for just $28.99 per month for its Traditional package. These fees are is slightly lower than the majority of security companies out there. This service comes with limited features but each security system comes with 24/7 ADT monitoring service for fire, carbon monoxide, flood, and burglary and a 6-month money-back guarantee. If during this time, you are at all dissatisfied with the service that ADT provides, they will refund you the installation charge and any monitoring fees you’ve accrued.

The equipment that ADT offers with the traditional plan includes a wireless control panel, door sensors, and window sensors. For additional fees, you can add fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide monitoring equipment to any home security system. Security cameras or an additional motion detector may also be purchased separately.

The ADT video plan incorporates video surveillance with the all the features included in the other ADT alarm packages. The plan comes with free equipment installation and a Nest Learning Thermostat which is just one of the perks of paying $49.99 per month for this plan. Not only that, but this plan includes home automation features that let you control door locks, lighting, your thermostat, and your garage, remotely from the ADT Pulse interactive mobile app.

The options for the video security plan are more robust. In addition to the standard wireless control panel and door sensors and window sensors, you will also have the option of adding security cameras that you can access through the mobile app. With this, as well as all of ADT’s home security systems, it comes with 24/7 ADT monitoring service.

The Bad

A new ADT Customer will be able to take advantage of its lowest monitoring plan (Traditional) at $28.99 per month, however, this plan does not come with free equipment installation or the extended limited warranty. You will be required to sign a 36-month monitoring contract (24-month if you are a resident of California) which is unfortunate if you become dissatisfied with the alarm system after the 6-month money-back guarantee period.

Users of our site have had quite a bit to say aboutADT-Monitored Security and the customer service it provides. Several reviews proclaimed problems with sales reps not showing up to appointments they scheduled, not to mention the hours that some customers have been put on hold for. Other ADT customers using its monitoring services have mentioned that they were charged high cancellation fees as well as expensive rates for installation and service visits.

The Bottom Line

ADT Security Systems offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT Security Systems, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits.

While you can learn a lot by reading the ADT reviews on this site, you won’t have as much luck on the official ADT website. The security company is not very transparent about the pricing of the plans or equipment. For example, you are unable to see at a glance the price of motion detectors, additional control panels or carbon monoxide detectors. Potential customers should also be wary of what prices are shown. There are often additional fees that will raise the total bill when all is said and done.

We do not recommend ADT-Monitored Security to be your home security provider. There are many other companies out there that offer better customer service and are more affordable.     I came home to find an advertisement in my mailbox to contact one of their presentatives. With the comment nice car and a smiley face – along with his extension. I have an exotic car with a cover on top. This person snooped on my property ? I’m supposed to choose a company that invaded my privacy and writes sloppy messages to get my business.

    Beware of this company. I was told on day one if my husband was deployed I would simply have to produce his orders to terminate the contract upon moving with zero fees. This was a lie. Unfortunately, ADT led me on and stated six months later, when my husband obtained deployment orders, that becuase I am not serving and it’s me husband who is the serviceman, I cannot cancel contract until I paid 75% of the remaining balance- a whopping $700.00. Sad thing is, my husband was standing right next to me while I was doing the paperwork. Had he signed the contract instead of me all would have been fine, had I been the servicemen, we wouldn’t have been screwed. Dont wives “serve” as well when their husbands are “away?”
    This company will scam you sideways for a dollar and to top it off they DO NOT support or respect the military or military families. Stay as far away from them as you can…better luck getting a guard dog.

    Oh and side note: good luck with customer service. I have been transferred anywhere from 3 to 10 times, to different departments and associates, any time I call customer service.

    I’ve had my ADT system 16 years and have always had great service both monitoring and installation of equipment. I recently had ADT technician John B. ( Anchorage Alaska) install a new piece of security equipment in my home. He is a very knowledgeable and personable tech and installed the equipment in a timely manner and explained everything I needed to know about it’s operation before he left. I will be asking for him the next time I have need to have my system checked or upgraded.

    I don’t even own the house that the ADT system is installed on anymore and I keep being charged beyond the date of my contract expiration. I have called multiple times to cancel my contract, but they keep billing me regardless!! Now I’m in collections and have bill collectors chasing me because I closed my account down that they were taking money from just so they could stop taking money they had no right to. I’ve documents EVERYTHING and I plan to sue them in small claims court to get my money back. If you use them, you better be sure to document everything also otherwise you’re going to regret it. This is a dishonest company. Check out the class action being filed against him for misleading people!

    One of the worst companies I’ve dealt with. Ridiculous customer service that you will be easily transferred 3 times per call. If you see an ads that says $24 per month, that’s simply a lie. It will cost about $1,000 to $3,000 initial fee plus $60 to $120 monthly fee. And they will open a big hole to install a system, and they will not fix it even though technician will say, “yea yea we will fix it”. That’s additional couple of hundreds dollars. And when you call to complain, they will transfer you to so many department without your permission and you have to explain the situation every time. This is a typical company that that everyone hates. I so recommend you to avoid this company at any cost.

    They installed a crappy system and it doesn’t connect to the app and it’s not monitored appropriately. Oh by the way they advertise it will only be $29.99 a month but there’s no way that is true. More like $60 a month with no cameras and an old system. They also charge you for every time something goes wrong with the system and you need it to be fixed. This has happened every six months on our system. When you also called to cancel they fail to say that you need a written signed note. Stay away from ADT. I’ve provided proper documentation and military orders and they keep dragging their feet to get more money from us!

    We had ADT since 2008 with our business. We originally got the service contract through one of ADT’s distributors. Then we eventually expanded
    into another suite and got the service for over there. We never needed there service as there was never an instance where someone tried to break in, but they never came out to maintain any of the equipment either, and when our batteries stopped working we bought new batteries because they told us it was our responsibility. Over the years our service went up from $32.99 to $54.57 which is understandable as we went from one suite to two in 2010. But then all of a sudden in 2014 our bill went to $175.00 per month and since our bookkeeper pays all of the bills we didn’t notice. Nothing had changed and we had not requested anything from ADT. It didn’t take long for the bill to creep up from $175.00 to $186.00 and was at $186.00 until recently in March 2018 when we told ADT that they were too expensive and we were cancelling our service and going with someone else. ADT’s account manager wanted to talk with us about our account because they wanted to do everything they could to keep us as a client. I spoke with the acct manager and they told me that ADT unlike other companies provides their clients with new equipment, maintains and services the equipment for their clients. I told the acct manager that this was not true as ADT had never come out to check on the equipment and in fact we had to replace the batteries because we were told it was our responsibility. Long story short, because we were originally with a distributor, ADT was not responsible to maintain the equipment but I found out that ADT Corporate bought our contract from the distributor a long time ago and they should have sent us a new contract with new terms but they never did. They just raised our rates and collected the money, hoping we wouldn’t find out. I was told that buying contracts from their distributors is very lucrative for ADT and this was an ADT employee that told me all of this! So we definitely were not going to do business with ADT after this revelation. So I have been trying to cancel our service with them for the last 3 months. I had our original contract, which was the only one they had on file that we signed. It read that we did not owe them a cancellation fee after so many years and we had cleared that time period considerably. The woman I spoke to on the phone at ADT agreed and said she would get the cancellation fee taken off and we would owe nothing. But never the less, I still got another bill in the mail saying we owed them money for the cancellation fee. Again I called and it was agreed that we did not owe them any money and this time the woman I spoke to said she would send me an email stating we are cancelled and that our balance was zero. Do you know what? I didn’t get that email!
    I would have never taken the time out of my busy schedule to write this review but this company is underhanded. ADT is willfully dishonest. I would highly recommend that you do not do business with them. You may live to regret it. We sure did.

    I would not recommend ADT to anyone! When I was quoted and given a price it was 100% just a baseline price. When the technician came out he for sure works off commission because he tried to get me to “secure” my “entire” house for over $4,000. I am a single mother working two jobs I am not giving you all 4k. The $27 promotional price is for the system to get hooked up to a LANDLINE! If you want the system hooked up without using a landline that is an extra $20 a month! The tablet that now comes standard with most home security systems they wanted to charge me $220. The app that you can manage the security system from your phone was also an extra $20 or so dollars a month with TWC it’s free!. When I tried to cancel it was the most frustrating and ridiculous process. I had to end up calling FIVE times to try to get an email sent to me so I could cancel. Which by the fifth call the representative just said I needed to write a letter and either mail or fax(no email who still uses mail or fax??!!!!) to cancel the service when the previous four reps could have told me that. I was told I would only get charged the prorated amount for the current month and next month’s bill they charged me double that!!! DO NOT GET ADT!!!

    BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY! I have spent the last two months trying to get out of contract because this system is FAR from protecting my home. They offered a $99 installation, we paid about $4000. No big deal, I wanted the mack daddy system. Surely you would think paying that much money it would be good. The problem is when ADT whom Defender represents answers the phone and argues with you whether someone is in your home whne the alarm goes off and then won’t dispatch the police, THAT’S A HUGE PROBLEM. I could give a list of 20 different things. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE WITH THIS SYSTEM. We even had ADS come into our home and look at the system. They said 6 windows could easily be breached without the alarm going off. I went through the garage and all the way into the kitchen and the alarm never went off because the double back tape didn’t hold and the motion sensor was laying on the floor.

    We have had ADT for years. Their customer service is excellent. The installation Technicians have ALWAYS answered questions, explained how things worked and never tried to offer more than we needed. We have lived in two separate states, and the quality is still excellent! When an alarm does go off, (usually because we forget to disarm) we receive a phone call within 30 seconds or less. This makes us feel very safe. We would never choose anyone else except ADT.

    If your already on a contract don’t plan on moving. They will make you purchase more equipment to upgrade, you can’t move the equipment you already purchased and then they make you sign another 3 year contract even if you’re already on contract. Stay away from ADT and go with a no contract home security service.

    I just received yet another phone call from the same area code and prefix as my phone. This is a scam being used by telemarketers to make you answer the call because of the familiarity of the number. These telemarketers co-op these numbers; this MUST be illegal. I know someone who got one of these calls from their own number!

    In any case, I went ahead and found out that it is ADT that is using this aggravating, and probably illegal method to secure new customers. Please boycott ADT. This is the only way we can stop these intrusive calls.

    Had in incident at my home last night.Could not access my alarm system/camera’s on line…Wondering what was wrong, I called ADT and found out that someone had cancelled my account. A company that is suppose to specialize in security, allowed a stranger(they gave me her name) I never herd of before, stop my protection. What hurts so much is I’ve been with them for 10 years,automatic pay,and they never verified it with me…So, be aware ADT customers, your home protection can be cancelled by anyone, anytime…When I needed you(ADT) the Most, after 10 years of being your customer, you left me without the service I paid for…NO PROCESS IN PLACE TO PROTECT YOUR CLIENTS…SHAME ON YOU!!!

    They could not tell me how this happened. I spoke to 2 different representatives, was on hold for 30 minute. Still nothing. Without having a conclusion as to why this happened, they wanted to proceed to set my account back up and continue to charge me as if nothing happened. In this high climate of identity theft, I’m boggled as to how this could happened…I felt no since of sensitivity as to what happened to me..They just wanted the money, after they left me vulnerable…SHAME ON YOU ADT!!!

    The installer caused a lot of damage to our walls and windows. They never fixed the damage even after being contacted several times.
    At the end of the contract, we canceled and they charged us for another month. We called to get out account credited and they would not issue credit.
    They called us several times after canceling to get us to stay and the calls were even a bit harassing.
    The system didn’t work for 5 months before we canceled and they would not fix it.

    I regret ever getting ADT. When we signed up, a sales man and to our door. We could not at the time afford the monthly rate of $65. So we said we wanted to wait to sign up in 3 months. Of course he wanted the sale. So he made some calls and said he set us up with a package where we wouldn’t have to make our first payment for 3 months. Ok, we can do that. Then they come to install it and I am on the phone and they tell me the first payment was going to be taken out that day. I say no, that’s not what we agreed on. They have the sales rep call me. He THEN tell us (which he never told us to start) we would actually be reimbursed for those first few months. So they would send us a check. Annoyed at this point, but ok. Never get the check. It’s been 3 months. I’ve paid that payment which I couldn’t afford every month because I can’t cancel because that fee is outrageous. I’ve tried contacting the sales rep and Adt directly countless times. They don’t care. They never get back to me. They say they will. Worst company I’ve ever dealt with in my life. I can’t wait till our contract is up. I would never advise anyone or get their service.

    DO NOT GET THE CCTV CAMERA SYSTEM FROM ADT , extremely expensive , paid $2776 for 4 cameras and have had it for less than a year, and Every month I have techinicians coming over because I can’t see any images., plus if you cancel they won’t refund you anything and still they will charge you a cancellation fee.

    I wanted the Basic $27.99 plan we agreed all my doors and windows will be covered. When the Technician Nadir K. arrived, he said yes everything is included. He placed the keypad drilled holes in my wall. Then he told us that after my $2000 credit I will have $1500 balance. EACH SENSOR IS $129 or $149 for the glass break. They deduct the motion, smoke detector everything from the $2000. I did not ask for Cameras nothing more than my covering my 15 opening. Told him to take his stuff and leave. Learn from my mistake. Ask about the prices of everything for he starts installation. 2.5 hours plus aggravation.
