  • High monthly monitoring fees: Standard monitoring plans for new customers range from $36.99 to $52.99 per month. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is considerably higher than other industry leading providers and their respective lower plans.
  • A long, 36-Month contract: ADT provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 3 year (36-month) contract. Also it’s important to note that these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay what they owe on the contract in the event that they try to cancel early.
  • Video surveillance option: ADT has a video plan option where for $49.99/month, you get the standard home security package along with a camera that includes video surveillance features that you can monitor through the ADT mobile app. Most home security service providers still do not offer video surveillance as a service. So if this is an important feature to you, you’ll want to consider ADT.
  • Customer service complaints: Common complaints of ADT customers include sales and installation reps failing to show up to scheduled appointments, long wait times, and high cancellation fees. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding ADT from real customers.
  • Our recommendation: Despite being the industry’s most well-known name and arguably its largest institution, we recommend other more inexpensive and more customer-oriented home security providers. We suggest looking into companies like Frontpoint Security and Protect America.

    Do Not use ADT!!!! They are liars and have already been in class action suit because of their lies. They lie about pricing, they lie about being able to take equipment with you if you move, they lie about transfer charges etc.

    I called to cancel my account on Sunday, was told someone would call me back in 24 hours. After no return call, I called back on Thursday to cancel. I was then told there is a 30-day cancellation policy and that I would be billed for the month of May (this is April) and then reimbursed after that for the time not used in May. I informed them this was not acceptable.

    My further issue is that I have not received any services from them for at least the last 6 months (admittedly from them 45 days which they can view at quick glance in their system). If they have not received any communication from me for this extended period of time why did I NOT receive a call from them asking what was wrong with my system. This is something they admit should have happened.

    So my issue is if they now want me to abide by a 30 day cancellation policy that I was not aware of, then I should be asking for a refund for the last 6 months that I have paid for a non-existent service.

    Very unacceptable customer service. The don’t care about the customer only about the $.

    ADT Charged me 300$ over on my account! they continued to bill me for a location i had moved out of. I found out from reviewing my bills and expenses. I called early March 2019 and as of today April 4, 2019 I still have not received my money. They were supposed to refund it on the original card they charged me on and then they decided to send a check. When i called to find out where the check was they have no idea or when i will receive the check. I have called customer service many times the only response i have is that they will check the refund department. I am extremely unsatisfied with this company.Do not recommend

    Pushy phone sales tactics! They try to take your money before demonstrating a product/ service just because of the ADT name. Multiple red flags on the call. Run when a company refuses to answer your questions or allow you to follow your own buying process!! Boo ADT!! Sorry I called you!!

    I cannot use my motion sensor because I have a pet, leaving my home half protected. I am paying $48 dollars each mont just for front and back door security. It’s a good thing someone is always home. The sale rep that came to my home told me I could cancel my contract at any time. He failed to tell me I would pay a 50 percent early cancellation fee. I have a 1 because the system works.

    Do not be deceived by ADT’s gimmicks! They GIVE you absolutely NOTHING! After being duped into thinking I’m getting over 800.00 in equipment, including a video doorbell camera. They charge, in advance, another 300.00, before they would even install that so call “free” video doorbell camera. And you need to know, this is in a black and white viewing!! Also your monitoring cost goes UP with the camera! SMH! I was better off with “RING”! AND If you want to know which point of entry is being entered/threatened…another couple hundred is added on for additional equipment to tell you “front door” or “kitchen window”! That should be basic security 101…Why have to pay to know which entry is being threaten? and its a pitiful little system that you have to be close to, to even hear it!
    And when they promise you a 100.00 gift card to ease your frustration…Please note that another 4.95 is tacked on for every single gift card! ADT separates the “Haves and the Have Nots” and when they finish with you…BELIEVE…YOU WILL “HAVE NOT”! Overall NOT a good experience! I think this company puts the Greed in Greedy!

    ADT is the worst company for security. I tried cancellation of services due to horrible service, bad experiences and bad quality and they told me that I had to pay $1,200 and I only had the service for 16 days and have called every single day for various reasons

    In November of 2018 I called ADT to inform that I will be moving out from my home Port Moody, BC to our new home in West Kelowna. I wanted to transfer my service from the house I sold to the new house in West Kelowna. An appointment was booked for DEC to have the service transferred and installation. Nobody came and I followed up with a phone call from West Kelowna and a new installation date was booked for January 2019. The installation was finally done and everything should have been ok. But not, the nightmare just began. In January I received a letter from ADT asking me for over $600 because I cancelled my service at my old home. Of course I called them up and spoke with a representative in January. I was told that they take care of it and cancel the fee as I didn’t cancel my service but transfer it. I though everything was ok. But not, exactly a month later, I get another letter, threatening this time. I called them up again, and I was told the same thing. They will take care of it and I will not be receiving any letters again. A month later I get another letter from their collection agency. I called them up again and the lady I talked too, apologized and promised that she will take care of it personally. I asked her to call me back to confirm, but she never did. Yesterday I got another letter…I called them back and talked to agent named Claude. He promised that a manager will call me back. Nobody did. I asked them what did I do wrong, I even offered to pay the fee. I just want this to be over. I have an amazing credit that this company is ruining it. I asked them to cancel my service and offer to pay anything that I owe. They refused and say that everything will be fine. This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. Enough!

    Extremely bad, dishonest company. Extremely hard sell when you buy. ADT then makes it as difficult as possible to cancel your service – they constantly harass you, demand that you listen to their sales pitches for stuff you don’t want, require you to call different numbers to cancel your home security and health services, and make you wait on hold while listening to ominous messages about how you’re putting your family at risk by not having their services. Pricing is high compared to comparable services, and double what you can get if you install yourself and pay for monitoring. Their sales agents claim that other services are much worse on monitoring, and when you say there are a lot of different services that they can’t possibly know about, that consumer reports disagrees, etc., they keep up with their threatening tone.

    This is really appalling, and the government should investigate this company.

    Phone service people are usually dumb and unhelpful. Seems to be based in Florida, which is not a state where people have much of a concept of what good customer-focused service looks like.

    A customer service representative named Calvin called to replace battery of our system and promised it was only $50 charge for the battery, no hidden cost. When the service man come he gave us a bill of $131.08. I called customer service to complain about the inconsistency of the charge. They promised to lower the charge down to $50 as promised at the first place. A few days later, I received an invoice of $131.08 again. I am shocked to how ADT do their business: NOT HONEST AT ALL!!!!!

    Absolute worse so-called professional service ever!!! First of all, they failed to properly set my alarm, so once i had a break-in, my cameras did not even record. Secondly, i tried TWICE to make appointments for additional installations, and both times, they did NOT show up. When i tried to call and find out why, My call was not answered. I left several messages and they NEVER called me back. Also, over the phone service takes between 45 minutes to an hour, and the online service only allows you to make changes if you allow them to send you junk email. PLEASE DON’T USE ADT. I WOULD NOT WISH THIS TRAGEDY ON MY WORSE ENEMY!!!

    The entire experience with ADT and their subcontractors is a nightmare. They do nothing but rip you off, do not follow through on promised rebates and every time you call to be released from the contract, they tell you another story. It will cost you a small fortune to use them as your security system, there are other companies that are much more willing to provide service at a fair reasonable rate. This is the biggest rip off I have ever been involved with and would recommend them to no one.

    Worst company. They do fake promises by telling they will escalate the complaint but they never did. There is no communication between staff members.
    They have remove my regular doorbell putting their own which has stop working and they have never come back to replace my doorbell . Their door bell camera has stop working and they are telling me they don’t have that type of product anymore I have to purchase a new one and there will be new rate for me ongoing . They are all fake . They keep on sending me invoices for bill that was already paid .. WORST COMPANY . Am just waiting my contract with them to be over ..

    I will start from the beginning. We bought a brand new house and these sales guys knocked on our door. We set up the appointment and listened to what they had to say. They told us multiple times that we would be in a 2 year contract. Myself, my husband and my mother were all there. They went through each page of the contract very quickly and did not allow time for actual review. I learned my lesson. From now on I will be that annoying person who insists on reading all fine print before signing. Needless to say the 2.5 years we had adt, the pulse app that they charge extra for never worked. The one time our alarm was activated when we weren’t home, the person they sent was here when my husband came rushing home but wouldn’t even go into the backyard to investigate. He told my husband everything out front looked intact. Well the glass break sensor at the back of the house was the one activated so of course the front of the house is fine. Anyway, fast forward to multiple calls to them complaining about the app that they blamed on cell towers and our internet and alarm going off in the middle of the night because the wind blew our garage door and shook it a little. Come to find out, the sensors installed on our garage doors we’re not meant for garage doors. We waited for our “2 year” contract to end only to be told when we tried to cancel that we are in a 3 year contract and would have to pay $400 to get out of it. The next time I called to cancel, I was told that everything installed in my house was outdated by a decade and that if we stay with them they will completely upgrade our equipment for free. When I questioned why they would install outdated equipment into a home they said we went through an authorized dealer who did that and they were also the ones who lied about the length of the contract so it has nothing to do with adt. I told the person they are wrong and it goes to show that adt is ok with using dishonest authorized dealers. In the end they said I owed $260 to cancel and that I would be billed for it. I told them to send me the invoice and not to draft it from my bank account. A month later, they took my monthly payment out and when I called they said I still had to pay that because it takes a month for the cancellation to go into effect. Then this week they sent me an invoice for $217 and then drafted $281 out of my account. They are the worst company to do business with. Go with Sting Alarm. They give more, cost less, and their equipment works.

    The ADT company is completely dishonest and disrespectful to their customers. They will lie to you and apparently they’re ok with it. They blame the services not mentioned over the phone on the employee “forgetting”.

    Also I have noticed that there is a pattern of sexism within the company and most women are the ones that report the unfairness of the company. I did not know that women were inferior when I comes to home security. It’s like going to mechanic shop all over again.

    For a company that is supposed to prevent people from stealing from others they’re stealing from their customers by quoting one price from something that was never discussed then saying oh well there’s nothing we can do to rectify the issue you can cancel in 3 days.

    I’m sure the late Edward C or Jim D or Tim W or Marc B would not appreciate knowing any of this.

    What kind of home security system is ok with their employees defrauding others? Shame on your company in 2019. I give you zero stars and will never ever recommend this company to anyone.

    By far the worst customer service I have ever had. We transferred our service because we had $600 left on the contract. They came to our new home which is on the historic Registry and told us they couldn’t put in the system due to the walls in the windows being so old. Then they took the $600 directly out of my bank account. Without telling me! When I tried to call I talked to six different people who were all beyond rude!

    I called ADT for security for my mom after my dad died. Quoted one price for this big promotion going on and than charged over thousand dollars more! Instead of feeling like my mom was going to be safe, I felt like my mom just got robbed by ADT!

    Their fees are high…I pay 47.00 a month for the cellular service. The problem is that I’ve been with them for 6 years + and they never upgrade the hardware. I’ve had the same equipment for years…it works but I would like something smaller than a toaster oven on my wall…just saying.

    I want to give them a -10 but not available. I cancelled service and they continued the auto payments for two additional months. Yesterday I was told for the first time cancelation had to done in writing with 30 days notice so they terminate my service today but keep the payment for next month. I agree with other reviews.
