  • High monthly monitoring fees: Standard monitoring plans for new customers range from $36.99 to $52.99 per month. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is considerably higher than other industry leading providers and their respective lower plans.
  • A long, 36-Month contract: ADT provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 3 year (36-month) contract. Also it’s important to note that these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay what they owe on the contract in the event that they try to cancel early.
  • Video surveillance option: ADT has a video plan option where for $49.99/month, you get the standard home security package along with a camera that includes video surveillance features that you can monitor through the ADT mobile app. Most home security service providers still do not offer video surveillance as a service. So if this is an important feature to you, you’ll want to consider ADT.
  • Customer service complaints: Common complaints of ADT customers include sales and installation reps failing to show up to scheduled appointments, long wait times, and high cancellation fees. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding ADT from real customers.
  • Our recommendation: Despite being the industry’s most well-known name and arguably its largest institution, we recommend other more inexpensive and more customer-oriented home security providers. We suggest looking into companies like Frontpoint Security and Protect America.

    We contacted ADT about switching to their company because we wanted a doorbell camera. We were quoted a price of $58.99 a month. We decided not to go with them. Then we were bombarded with calls offering all kinds of deals. Finally spoke to a supervisor and she told us we can get doorbell camera, sensors, key fobs, she cut installation fee in half, offered $100 Visa gift card. All this for $36.99. We said ok. She set up appointment for next day with a tech. He came out, brought all kinds of equipment with him. I specifically said, now this is $36.99, right? He said, let me get started then we’ll talk cost. He took our existing key panel out, installed his, then said ok, let’s talk costs. He decided we needed all kinds of protection. He added it up and it was $6000, but because we have excellent credit, he would take off $2000! He would set up payments for $4000. We said no, we only wanted to upgrade to doorbell with camera for $36.99. Turns out for that price you get very basic service, no doorbell. Bait and switch. After several phone calls to his superiors, he reinstalled our old keypad. They would not budge on price they had quoted. Basically called us liars. We’re still waiting for installation fee to be refunded. Customer beware, they lie to you to get their foot in the door. I would never do business with them.

    Good afternoon
    I would like to personally address this review to Ms. Sadie B. This Young Lady exhibited Excellent Customer Service. Ms. B represented ADT with Knowledge of Business, Professionalism, as well as Compassion. Three keys of Customer Service. I spoke with quite of few Home Security System Representatives, in my opinion Ms. B was the only one that displayed a High Level of Customer Service Excellence, and because of her, I have recommended ADT to several co-workers.

    When you call into ADT to find out about their services and what they have to offer, they make it sound like it is the best thing, next to slice bread and it is so easy to cancel if you do not like their service. The truth is they lie to get what they want. After several hours on the phone, being on hold, getting transfer and being hung up on, my service is still not cancelled and never worked to begin with. I am going on almost a month now. Not to mention, they attempted to charge my card without my permission for fees that were not disclosed to me. The technician was the most unprofessional individual I met with no personality or common sense. The technician didn’t even set up the system correctly and it has never worked, I am not able to arm the alarm at all. They are strong arming me to keep them since we did not cancel within a 3 day time frame (which was not told to us when we were sold it, we were told, we had 90 days). They clearly see the calls and that we did call within 3 days but are not willing to acknowledge the fact that we wanted to cancel the service, why else would we call in???? Worst customer service and worst company I have ever dealt with. I plan on reporting this to the better business bureau, corporate office and getting my lawyer involved. I have never been this upset about a business transaction my entire life.

    I have a 3 year contract with them for 2 homes. Just called customer service because cameras are not working. I was told everything is under warranty for the 3 years, but found out today I have to pay $25 for them to repair their equipment that’s under warranty!!! Wish I went with another provider…. which would of been so much less a month. Can’t wait till my contract is done!!

    This has turned out to be the worst company I could ever have chosen to do business with.I was quoted a price,had system installed in January and set up auto deduct billing which they have been withdrawing each month.Today I got a text saying they were turning my system off for non payment.ADT used to be a really good company to do business with but that had been over twenty years ago.I would tell anyone considering them to go with some one else and not consider ADT.

    Hard to cancel, even if contract is over and system hasn’t been monitored in years. terrible customer service. Just want to take your money for nothing!!!!..DON’T USE THEM!!
    When my land line was cancelled they did not know how to run system. Still charged me for three years. I have to change my credit card to stop payments. It’s ridiculous.

    The contract is entirely too long which one must wonder about a company that needs to tie people down for so long, they must not be able to get them to stay after the first year without one. The cancellation penalties are extreme and they dont explain the cancellation process well when one signs up/ends service. The customer service reps need to be trained to slow down and listen to the customer so they can help better. I wouldn’t recommend ADT and I’ll never go with them again.

    I just canceled my alarm system with adt i just realized that i canceled my land line on witch my alarm was connected 2 years ago and not once in this period of time they called me saying that there was something wrong i was payin 45 dollars a month for a alarm that didn’t work bad bad service will never have business with ADT ever again

    the sale prep never explain for new contract new customers be carefully when you sign new contract and be carefully when you call them to fix your problem for your alarm every time they come they will put you another 2,3 years contract and if you cancel the fee so high.

    Used ‘bait & switch’. I’ve all the notes from my initial discussion RE: the specifics of the offer. The offer was $28/mo. The bill I received was for $77. When I called RE: the overcharge, I was told w/o a smartphone I would be billed over $50/mo. This was never mentioned in my initial discussion. I unplugged the system within 2 weeks of it’s installation. Because I became ill, removing all the equipment took months. I returned all equipment & paid the agreed upon $28/mo for the months I had the equipment. I have a ridiculously high credit score, because I have never failed to pay any bill prior to this transaction. I filed a report with the BBB & added a comment to the credit bureaus. It’s notable that there are 1399 reviews with a 0 rating & only 98 reviews with a 10 rating.

    On March23rd 2019 a tech came to install, but I was told over the phone that I would get my security system plus four cameras and a video doorbell. For the same price of $52.99 but never was informed I had to buy my own cameras and doorbell. I was so upset they should inform people especially new customers because we don’t know how they’re packages are not the prices.I called to get it waived but they said NO! So I got even badder because of not being informed I think it’s just a waste of time for the customer like for the tech.. Very bad customer service in being informed..

    We have had ADT for 20 years, and have been very happy with their services. It was time to upgrade our antiquated system. Michael M from ADT Residential Security Sales New Mexico, came to our home and reviewed different services that were aligned with our preferences. Mr. M’s competence, professionalism and knowledge helped us to provide security for our family and our home. Our new ADT security system will allow us to use Smart Technology with our phones and tablets anywhere in the world.

    I won’t even attempt to explain my feelings regarding ADT. I have spent so much time talking to various Customer Service people, Senior Commercial Account people and Technicians to fix and circumvent current and future issues. Totally dissatisfied. I could write a 1500 page novel and not explain the ineptness of ADT. Please take my word…ADT ranks at the top of the worst companies in the modern world.

    I had bad experience with ADT, I got quote over the phone and they told me they will give me credit for all equipment and after technician came in my house he want to charge me extra for equipment and he take out my previous security keypad on the wall and he cut wire for my air conditioner after I said no I don’t want work with ADT and he didn’t fix my stuff and he left. I paid $300 to electrician to come and fix those thing he misstep. I never suggest this company to any one .

    The worst company with the customer service. No one appeared to communicate with the other. Various plans, packages, promises and commitments were made with ALL either a lie or said to just keep me interested. With each and every call to an ADT rep. it was one after the other either stating something different then what I was previously told by another rep. This was all coming from what I was told to be managers in their Customer Loyalty Department. Apparently customer loyalty is just a name and not a commitment. I would NOT recommend ADT to even put a new or upgraded system on an outhouse let alone my home again. Buyers beware!!!!

    On March 12, 2019. I contacted ADT to give me a quote for the home security, I spoke to a guy named Steve who later forwarded my call to a lady (can’t recollect her name). The lady told me that they can quote me a better than online rate and also give a $99 visa card that will take care of installation.
    She told me for that they just need basic details before she can tell me the exact monthly rate. After I gave her my name and address. She mentioned for her to process the rate she will need credit card number. It was already appearing “fishy” but ADT is a well known company (same as one thinks of ATT). So, I told her I do not give that kind of information over the phone. She insisted that they cannot charge until they have security code. Anyways, I hesitatingly gave my credit card information in hope of a good quote and getting one thing checked of my long list of to-do items of the day. Well, she gave me the quote ($37/month for 3 year contract which was same as online) and told me if I would like to set up installation. I refused and assumed that was end of it.
    Next day, I recieved a hard inquiry by DEFENDER SECURITY (for ADT) and a $107 charge on my credit card. When I reached out to ADT customer service again and got hold of another manager (Sherry) she apologized told me she will escalate and remove any charges. Guess what, nothing happened on day 7, and I had to dispute with both the credit agency and credit card company. Complete waste of time and a predatory company ADT.
    Go with local home security service providers. The average rate should not be more than $16/month (with no contract) for a basic security installation. Don’t buy shenanigans of ADT.

    tried for two months to get cancelled spoke with 9 reps over four conversations then told the amount I pay each month could be cut in half if stay..After 17 years with the co. now I get a discount……still did not want to take no for answer and would not take my written notice as cancellation so going to bill for another month…real sham

    THEY ARE TERRIBLE!!! THEY LIE ABOUT EVERYTHING. I tried for 3 months to cancel my account and they kept giving me excuses like, well, we didn’t ask for you password so we can’t cancel without this. WHAT? Then I get another bill and this is when she tells me about the password. So I give them the password and again they assure me I am cancelled. Then I get another bill with a big red line for past due!! I call and she says they can bill me for an extra 30 days after I cancel and since I didn’t give my password the first time they can now bill me for two months. At this point I think I must need to contact an attorney, how do I get rid of them??? I’m at my wits end. I hate them so much. I also have co-workers with some same issues of them lying about the monthly charge, term of contract and impossible to cancel. DON’T USE ADT, THEY ARE SCAMMERS!!

    Adt is nothing but a scam! They tell you that the price is $52 a month but charge $96 a month. I bought a house that already had adt so I switched it over to my name, they didn’t tell me or even show me any paper work saying that I was signing a 3 year contract. So when I go to cancel it now they want over $1000 for abunch of used junk that doesn’t even work properly. So before you sign up for this scam make sure you do your homework. Simplysafe is the way to go. I wish I would have know that before I got scammed into this adt garbage.
