ADT offers professionally installed home security systems in 40 U.S. states. They do not offer home security in the following US states: Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire. Almost all equipment needs to be purchased upfront. Monthly monitoring fees start at $27.99 for basic home security, $52.99 to use the ADT app, and $58.99 for video monitoring.

Pros

Video Surveillance Option

ADT has a video plan option where for $58.99 per month, you get the standard security systems package along with a camera that includes video surveillance features that you can monitor through the ADT mobile app. Most home security service providers still do not offer video surveillance as a service. So if this is an important feature to you, you'll want to consider ADT.

ADT Mobile App

With the ADT app, you can disarm and arm your ADT home security system, receive email and text message alarm notifications, and control your home's smart devices like smart locks and motion sensors. According to the ADT home security systems website, the ADT app uses innovative Z-Wave technology.

ADT Guarantees

ADT offers a six-month money-back guarantee on installation and monitoring if you are unhappy with your current home security system. Additionally, according to the company's website, ADT offers a theft protection guarantee. If your home has a burglary while your ADT system is set, ADT will give you up to $500 towards your insurance deductible.

Cons

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Standard monitoring plans for new customers start at $27.99 for their traditional package and goes up to $58.99 for video monitoring. Those interested in the ADT mobile app or an outdoor/indoor camera, will need to pay more for the more comprehensive home security packages. The cost could end up being higher than other leading home security system providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

Undisclosed Information

Unlike other home security companies, like Protect America, ADT does not disclose how much added on equipment is. While you can see that the company offers three packages, it's difficult to see the distinctions and what equipment is offered in each package.

Negative ADT Home Security Reviews

On BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, ADT customer rate the company at 1.2 out of 10. Common complaints of ADT customers include sales and installation reps failing to show up to scheduled appointments, long wait times, additional charges, and high cancellation fees.

We have received over 1,500 negative ADT reviews from real customers. We never scrub reviews to make companies appear a certain way to potential buyers and negative reviews cannot be paid off by the company.

Our Recommendation

ADT offers a video surveillance option, a helpful mobile app, a money-back guarantee, and a theft protection guarantee. Additionally, ADT offers a variety of high-tech products with their monitoring service: digital control panel, cameras, video doorbells, smart locks, motion detectors, and more. However, when you look at the customer reviews left for ADT, the good is outweighed by contract and customer service issues.

Customers are charged high monthly fees for ADT security services and are usually locked into a long-term contract. Also, there have been a plethora of negative customer reviews regarding ADT customer service and professional installation.

At this time, we do not recommend ADT for home security because of their negative reviews and their undisclosed information. We recommend choosing a home security company that discloses pricing and package information. Check out our top companies here.

ADT is the WORST system ever. It is useless. The customer service is terrible as well. They will lure you into a lengthy contract because they knew their system sucks. When you call in to cancel they will sweet talk you to prolonging your contract---DON'T. They will also make it very difficult for you to cancel. Just buy RING or other alarm system and pay nothing or 10$ monthly for professional monitoring.

The sales rep on the phone told me something completely different than when the "security advisor" that showed up told me and he stayed here 4 hours trying to force me to buy his services and refused to give me what I asked for initially even having the advertisement I got in the mail in my hand which he read and then the email that I had gotten.... After 4 hours of not talking "NO" for an answer he gets on the phone with his "boss" and proceeds to talk so badly about us to his "boss" that I almost cried.... He made sure we knew he drove one and a half hours to get to my home just to waste his time and gas that he would NOT get back....I should've called the cops but didn't think of That so I called my father and he came over and the guy still hadn't left when my father left.... They say it's NO pressure but by all means they will put every ounce of issue they can on YOU to force you to feel so bad that you get their services to the point her lied to me on so many levels when saying it was a 3 day money back her could call his "boss" to extend that policy but he wasn't allowed to and tried to make me pay $507/month plus $58.99/month for 4 months then $58.99/month after THAT for equipment I never asked for or wanted.... At this point there's no way I would tell any woman to meet with any ADT person ALONE.... DON'T DO IT....

I'm writing the review I'm very unhappy with ADT at this point, I just got this installed at my house and last night the system had gone off. Because the didn't hook the door sensor up right. So my family was thinking someone had came in the back door. Not only didn't ADT not call to make sure everything was okay the never ever set the cops, I had to call 911. They told me because I entered the code the assume everything was okay. What since does that make what if someone had a gun to my head and I had to enter my code to save my family life? how would they know I was okay if they didn't call??? Now there telling me that can't come out until tomorrow to fix the problems so I have to have that sensor on bypass. I'm completely not happy with ADT; and nor do I feel safe with this company at this point. If I wasn't in the contract I would be so done with them very unhappy with this company and upset that I put my family with them and we don't feel safe.

I have had the unfortunate experience with dealing with your customer service staff when looking for a company to provide security services. In many cases I was quoted 3-4 different rates for the same service with the same company??? Also some of your reps are rude especially when I requested to speak with someone specifically. Also I was addressed unprofessionally, customers should be addressed by the last name, I’m a customer not a friend so why I’m I addressed by my first name?? For these reasons I’m looking diligently for another company to provide the services I need.

We were paying for just home monitoring & they kept charging extra, which we assumed was for all the new modern technology we didn't have.So when we called to cancel there service, they lowered our bill because we felt that it was to much to pay for just in home monitoring. They did not tell us that we had to keep the service for x amount of months, it was all recorded when they lowered it so I told them to find the recording where they stated that & that, was agreed to, which they never have.. They went & auto debited our account for the amount they say we owed. Fortunately the bank caught it & got our money back from them, now they are turning it into collections, which we are both on social security & don't have it pay them. We were with them for over 10 years & thought they were a good company, but will never trust them again or give them authorization to debt our account. Oh, & they used another account # to debt our account when they did that.

Oh my. No wonder I’m having such a problem. ADT has a hx. We need to get a class action suit started. My complaint, I tried to cancel I have another service now. I informed several reps of need for cancellation . But ADT is now holding me accountable because I didn’t hold for 15 min for a particular person I needed to talk with. So they want to back charge me for monitoring when ADT was not actually monitoring me another company was. Sounds fishy to me.

This company has a classic bait and switch business model. When we called ADT to have a system installed they sent their authorized representative Defenders to install our system. We wanted to protect two homes and an outbuilding on the same property. We were originally told that this would require two systems with a separate panel for both houses. The outbuilding was to be part of one house’s system. After 4 days (not exaggerating) it was determined that the outbuilding was too far from either house and so it needed its own system for protection. We agreed to the additional cost and the third panel was installed. From the first conversation when we scheduled the installation we were assured my account would be consolidated for billing purposes regardless of the number of physical locations on my property or the number of addresses covered under the account. I also was assured that a manual billing was possible and the only thing they would hit my charge account for was the original installation. I will spare you the details of the initial billing issues that took months to straighten out but it suffices to say that if you start out with a list of equipment that doesn’t work and you move it to another “location/panel”, don’t expect them to be able to charge one location and credit the other. They have the charges down pat – the credits not so much. But back to the current issue, for some reason they seem totally incapable of combining the systems like they told me they could do. As a warning to any business out doing research – if you have multiple physical locations you too will have this problem. They charged my credit card (unauthorized) $58.99 on May 10th that is not reflected on anywhere on my account. The description says “ADT-Protect your home”. I have talked to them about this and received assurances they would investigate and either tell me why I owed it or they would credit my account. I have heard nothing from them and today I found and additional charge (unauthorized) of $58.99 on June 10th that is also not reflected in my account. I called them again today and they are again supposed to call me back since they cannot see any charges to my card on their system. Also, the May 10th is definitely a duplicate billing and I can only assume that given a couple of days I will receive another charge for $58.99 elsewhere on this same location. The accounting is a mess and last week I received notification that one location was going to stay with Defenders as my provider while the other locations are transferring to ADT. Exactly how do they intend to accomplish that if it’s actually one account? And exactly why is ADT not accepting one of the locations? Is it because I have complained? My husband and I are both in our seventies and I am beginning to believe that their lack of responsiveness is indeed a reflection of what they can get away with seniors as their clients. I wonder how many other seniors have similar complaints about ADT. I doubt that I am the only one. We had ADT years ago for our security provider but this is not the same company. I am thoroughly disgusted with this company and their sales practices.

Let me start by saying ADT is one of the most well known security providers but understand this, you are literally just paying for a name. Their sale tactics are very misinformed to say the least, they will typically quote you for the basic package they offer even after you inform them of what you want then they show up and that quote is nothing like what it sounded like over the phone. Customer service is ridiculous, very unprofessional and make you question how they’re even still in business. Their 36 month service contract “IS NOT” an industry standard (that in and of itself is the BIGGEST LIE they tell). They’re plenty of other companies that do make you sign a contract agreement but not just for servicing (typically lock you in unless you pay off your equipment in full). Even after you own all of your equipment outright (which they only offer you a maximum of 3 months to pay for), they still lock you in a service contract. If you happen to want to cancel your service for the sake of relocation or even personal preference, you have to pay 75% of what your monthly charges are x the remaining length of your contract term. DO NOT get the ADT pulse package unless you’re planning on installing cameras because you’ll be paying a 20 dollar markup on fees just to be able to arm/disarm your system on your phone. They have 3rd party installation companies that provide misinforming information so whatever you do read that ridiculously long contract you sign from beginning to end. All in all, I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND NOR OWN ANOTHER ADT SECURITY SYSTEM AGAIN!!!

I've learned the hard way, as many have and continue to do. I'm reading this isn't with just ADT but with all wireless wifi security systems in general. Lots of material on the internet on 'spoofing-jamming' wireless home security systems. My home system is basically maxed out with cameras and various sensors - monthly rate is nearly $65 per month. Sadly, these systems are easily 'spoofed', meaning cameras can be stopped from recording activity with range, while door/window sensors can be manipulated into thinking they are 'closed' when dwelling entry is actually underway, thereby not notifying the monitoring center that an intrusion is taking place. From the monitoring/tech center, everything will appear to be 'quiet' with no activity. The device needed (SDR or Software Defined Radio) can be bought off of eBay and/orAmazon for less than $50, can be programmed by the average highschooler who can access the frequencies (can usually be found on the internet) the security vendor is using. The two most common devices are: 1. One looks like a fat USB memory stick that is mostly used into tricking security cameras into not recording activity that is within their coverage area. 2. The other looks like a common tv remote control with a short HF flexible antenna. Apparently this one is most commonly used to defeat motion detectors, door and window sensors. During the ADT Tech's most recent visit, an 'opposition member' drove up next door and the camera(S) never recorded him despite being within range of 3 cameras. A short while later, the system was being overtly jammed. Tech stated he had never seen anything like it, phoned his tech support office, stayed on the phone with them for a few minutes, whereupon my system was completely turned off (reset?), presumably by ADT Support. Tech promptly announced that he had another appointment to attend and to phone ADT if my system didn't come back up. My system rebooted and came back up shortly after the tech left, appearing to work normally, like nothing had ever happened. I've been complaining about this since early last December and this was the first time I could replicate the condition with a tech present so now they can't say I'm full of it. I suspect this is something they have full knowledge of but would prefer to keep it covered up as sales would collapse tomorrow if the general public found out. Cops stated there was nothing I could do since I had no proof. Can't afford an attorney or private investigator. The 'opposition' consists of 7 entities that I know of, 3 of which are next door neighbors. Nothing of serious financial value has been stolen, but i've experienced 'unauthorized entries' despite having locks changed, repeated vandalism and unauthorized use of motor vehicles. This, and being taunted on a near daily basis. One of my backyard cameras that also caught part of their property was recently mis-aimed toward the ground. I could go on in much more detail but I feel everyone gets a picture of my predicament. And, I have two years left on the contract for a system that is practically useless.

Don't fall for ADT's sales. It's a bait and switch. I received a flyer in the mail offering $19.99 for one year. When I questioned it as "too good to be true" the sales person swore to me that that was the price. When the technician came out, he told it would be $48.99 a month!! This only after he had installed equipment. When I questioned him and showed him the flyer and reference number the sales person had given me, he asked, "Do you have a land line?" I said no, hadn't had one for years, like many people. After telling me that deal was only valid for a landline, I said the salesperson never mentioned the deal was only for a landline. I inspected the flyer closer, discovered in the third line of the small print that the deal was only with a landline. I called the company and got no satisfaction. The woman admitted they had already had 38 callers complaining. Shoddy business at best, and as soon as my contract is up, I will be switching to bay alarm or another company.

I moved from NC to FL in 2016. Prior to move, I called ADT to tell them I will turn off and transfer to my new location in Oct 2016. I was told that I could do this without a problem just reactivate when I moved and pick it up from there. I argued and was told that because I was in a new state that the contract I was tied into had to be restarted with a new one. So I lost a year and had to do three all over again. That was bad enough but the worse came when I had to redo the contract again in 2018 because I move from one town to another within the same state. I argued that I do not want a new contract that I didn't sign up for that and that I was in the same state so why should I have to pay for another contract. I was told that it was their policy. I kept arguing and the girl got a guy on the phone and he told me that it would cost a $1000 to end the contract. They were both had attitudes which gave me one and I lost the battle. The tech who installed my system used pieces from other security systems. Some of the window sensors were huge. Despite the cost I paid. Anything additional you need down the road requires a service tech. Doesn’t matter what it is. I have had ADT for about four years. When I needed 3 window contacts for my new basement windows. I had to have a service tech come out. For a wireless system they don’t let you do it. Which is weird. They blew me off for 2 appointments. On the third I said they install it for free or I’m not paying. They agreed. Then I was having issues with the keyfob. I called a few times and tried replacing the battery. Didn’t help. Finally it broke off my keychain. I initially reported it lost but found it when the tech arrived. The tech was argumentative when I wanted to utilize the insurance I’ve been paying for. He took the old one and stated he would update his notes. A month later the charge is still there. So I called and was ready to cancel. They offered me 44.99 and then 39.99 no contract. I said let me speak to my wife and make sure she wants to stay with ADT. She said she would give it one last shot. So I called to take advantage of the offer of 39.99. They said they would do it for a 5 year contract. So I contacted them on social media. They looked into and and then just reiterated the keyfob was reported lost, that they offered me 44.99 no contract. No one notates their dealings with you properly and it’s to their own detriment. I think they’ve just gotten used to keeping people in contract and not actually having to do anything to keep your business and it shows.

They charge a lot of money for basically nothing. My main beef with them is that the traditional breakers you attach to the windows are of terrible quality. They malfunction and/or detach quite easily; they use some really cheap glue (tape) to attach and with heat and time they simply fall off. The technicians don't even clean the surfaces properly. And, secondly, when you eventually have to call on something they are downright rude and unhelpful on the phone. The English is quite often hard to understand on the phone, which instills little or no confidence. I'd switch to another company in a heartbeat if we weren't stuck with ADT hardware.

ADT has been nothing but a headache from the time I first started business with them. The customer service is extremely unhelpful and is trained in unethical and sketchy ways to scam their customers. The prices are advertised as low and affordable until you a representative actually comes out to your house, at which point they let you know of all of the real costs that are initially hidden. And they lock you into a lengthy and costly contract. If you ever need assistance from customer support you are put on hold and transferred until you give up, and if you do happen to get someone on the phone it is obvious that they are trained to scam and steal from the customer. The equipment is over priced and the monitoring is a waste of money. Overall, I am surprised that ADT is allowed to continue as a company and I would never recommend it to anyone. Just spend 48 minutes on the phone trying to cancel, and ended the call with "my manager is going to call you back". Just a joke!

I would never recommend their service to anyone. We had ADT for 6 years and the one time it was needed, we realized what a crappy service this is. All is well when you don't have an issue. when you do, you see how well they react. We had left home early in the morning and after 15 minutes, we we got a call from ADT and we could not pick up the phone right away since I was driving but within minutes we checked the voicemail that said "Please call back if there is a need" and we were wondering how they expect us to call back if we are in trouble. We turned back home immediately to check the situation. In the meantime ADT had reached the emergency contact provided by us who was also on vacation. However, she tried to call back ADT and was on hold for over 15 minutes. At that point, she used good judgement and called the local police to investigate if all is OK at our house and had them call her back to let her know. ADT did NOTHING. Also when we drove back home after hearing the message from ADT about the alarm going off, we saw the cops and they confirmed that they had a call from our emergency contact because of which they had come to check. After the situation was resolved, we called back ADT to check what they did if anything when the alarm was set off and they claimed that their logs did not indicate any evidence of our emergency contact calling ADT and at that point I just asked ADT to cancel my services since I know that our emergency contact is extremely reliable and has come through at many difficult situations for us. The ADT representative continued to pursue us to remain as a customer for over half an hour and I had to be really firm to ask him to cancel the service right away. There are a LOT of other security systems out there which are cheaper and offer better service. I cancelled my service on the same day of the incident. I have NO TRUST in them whatsoever

I called on Monday n was told a tech will call me about when they can come out. I called on Wednesday asking why I gotta call them and when can you fix my alarm? Today is 22 May they can't get to me til 17 June - UNACCEPTABLE! I told them to hire more people. You can take my money but I gotta wait 3wks to see me. I rather get another security company then to wait that long.

You can't win, agents lack common sense. 2 plus 2 equals 4. They will insist it equals 5.. Told us we didn't have a contract, but they were taking 71 dollars a month out of our account.. Go figure.. I was always happy with ADT, can't understand the lack of concern for faithful customers.
