About New Mexico

New Mexico has a unique set of demographics that isn’t found anywhere else in the nation.

Over 43 percent of the state is Hispanic and another 10 percent is Native American, with an astounding 36 percent of the population that speaks another language besides English at home.

To go along with its diverse residents, New Mexico is also home to a wide array of extraordinary geography, from forested and snow-capped mountains to high deserts.

The state capital of Santa Fe was established over 400 years ago by Spanish explorers and is now home to hundreds of artists and museums which draw millions of tourists to the state each year.

New Mexico has the 4th highest crime rate in the nation and is above the national crime rate average in almost all categories: violent crime, property crime, and motor vehicle theft.

Their rates of assault are some of the worst in the country at 4.36 assaults per 1,000 residents, which is more than double the nation average.

They also have a much lower rate of law enforcement employees per capita than the rest of the nation.

Despite the high rates of crime, New Mexico’s rate of hate crimes are half of the national averages.
