Rhode Island is the smallest of the 50 states but is densely populated and highly industrialized.
The history of the state is centered on their belief in rebellion and defying authority. The state capital, Providence, was founded by Roger Williams, an exiled clergyman who was kicked out of Massachusetts in 1636.
Following his lead, the state was one of the first to declare independence from the British, refused to participate in the war of 1812, and is home to Dorr’s rebellion of 1842, which was a protest of property requirements for voting.
As for their economy, some of their most important industries are jewelry manufacturing, electronics, metal, plastic products, and boat construction.
The Rhode Island crime rate is lower than the national average crime rate, and is ranked number 17 on the USA.com crime index rankings.
They have lower rates of murder, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft than the rest of the nation, and a slightly higher rate of rape.
Their rate of hate crimes are also slightly higher than the national average, with a majority of them being related to race, religion, and sexual orientation.
