About South Carolina
Officially separated from North Carolina in 1729, South Carolina was the scene of many military battles during the Revolutionary and the Civil wars.
The Civil War was started in the state in 1861 when Southern troops fired on federal Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, which was then followed by South Carolina being the first state to secede from the Union.
Due to its warm climate, numerous golf courses, and beautiful beaches South Carolina has become a retirement center for baby boomers, attracting tens of thousands of retirees annually. Today, Charleston is one of the fastest growing cities along the east coast.
After the District of Columbia, South Carolina has the worst crime rate in the nation.
Their rates of murder, rape, assault, burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft are all higher than the national averages.
Also, the rate of hate crimes are higher than the national average, with higher rates of race and sexual orientation related crimes.
