About Virginia
Much of the early colonial history of the United States occurred in Virginia, such as the settlement of Jamestown in 1607, the first English city in the new world, and the first Thanksgiving in 1619.
The state also played a pivotal role in the Civil War—more than 2200 of the 4000 battles took place within the state.
Nowadays, Virginia is home to many federal government employees, with about one fourth of Virginia’s employees working in the nation’s capital, which is far more than any other state.
The second largest employment sector is the service sector, such as business, computer, and data-processing services.
The Virginia crime rate is much lower than the national average crime rate, coming in at number 8 on the USA.com crime index rankings.
Their rates of burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, robbery, and assault are all much lower than the national averages, some of which are two to three times lower. However, Virginia does have a higher rate of hate crimes, a majority of which are race related.
